Defensive Knife training in S. Cali

Since I have taken several PM's from people in the S. Cal area lately about a posible course date in their area this year, I offer the following to the members here.
I would be willing to come to that area in the fall if memebers here can swing getting a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 people together.
"Bruz" and "Penforhire", posters, have inquired and live relatively close, if you are from So. Cal and would like to be included please connnect with them or myself on PM's and we'll attempt to get something lined up for you folks this fall.
It can't happen until November as I'm on the Snake river in Idaho in October for a week with my instructor and old friends from the Riddles.

Bruz,
Add Penforhire, Combat-wombat and Psssniper as posibles to your list please.
The cost will be reasonable.
Lets get 10-20 together as possibles and work out the details for all and see where we stand in a few weeks or a month.

True, for those who care but do not know Arroyo Grande is bout half way between San Fran and LA on the coast, making us Central Calif I rekon.
Where are the rest of those interested located?

Atascadero is exactly halfway between L.A. and San Fran. I could get my folks to drive me a couple hours at most. We need no less than 10 people in the class. If it's more than 10, it has to be more than 14. Anything else and I can't afford it.

Brownie, I assume you're thinking of a class that at least starts with basics? Or is there some prerequisite study you recommend? Similar question about equipment, would my Kershaw Whirlwind be sufficient or ?
I'm in the LA area but would go as far as San Diego.

Thats correct sir. Trainers are provided to participants, bring gauntlet or ace bandage to wrap the wrist that holds the knife, eye protection, and any live blades you normally carry legally [ though they won't be used in class ].

Psssniper, if we end up having it in Arooyo Grande that is good you’re handled...
Combat-wombat is only 45 minuets north...
Penforhire, if you went north instead of south how far could you go?
Wilhelm, where are you located? Are you close to Arroyo Grande/ Pismo Beach area?
It’s a great vacation area if anyone wants to beat the heat...or beat the cold if its winter.
Brownie, maybe we could get more interest if we post what it will cost per person...

Morning Bruz:
If you can supply the room, an average room will do for up to 14 people usually with no problem.
I can train up to 20 per class but would prefer to keep it to 14 or so.
BTW--a gauntlet made of leather covering the wrist will certainly help diminish the bruises we'll get from two days on banging the blades. I have had students use ace bandages that work well. Most complain of sore wrists after the first days training.
Add KJay as a prospect from the forum as well please. He has expressed interest.

Bruz, I could see going as far north as S.L.O., my son-in-law's graduating from there in two weeks.
Brownie's cost of training in almost insignificant compared to travel cost, depending on where you hold it. It can be hard to find a cheap room near S.L.O. and, as a touristy destination, hotels are sometimes booked far ahead.
For instance, assuming we paid, round number, $100/day tuition, I would easily pay $200/day and end up ahead if it were held within an hour's drive of LA.

How 'bout Santa Barbara? It's about halfway between L.A. and SLO. SLO would be ideal for me, but I could probably get down to Santa Barbara.

At only $75. per day I would think there should be enough people responding that Brownie would need to put on 2 classes! Maybe a Central Calif and a Southern Calif. class.
Both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo are half to one hour from here so either would be fine, if we had it here we could use my office for free though. I think it would be hard to find anything in the other areas mentioned for less than a couple hundred per day, but that is just from my experiences finding conference rooms. Don't know everyones schedule either, any day would work for me but week day afternoons and evenings are best.
$150. for two days of training should be manditory to carry a knife for self defense...what did I just say? Think I have been in Kalifornia too long! $150. is very cheap insurance though, small price to pay if ever needed.

"Bruz" from this forum has a running list of people interested in the class this fall after I get back from the Snake River in Idaho in October.
We are looking at November, some weekend. Two days of training.
Everyone touch base with Bruz on PM's that are interested and see if we can get solid on this in the next few weeks.
I'm ready to impart the knowledge when you folks are ready to go.

Have had alot of e-mails regarding the training deal our Brownie is offering us, hopefully this will answer some of the questions.
What I have heard Brownies' class is high energy like the training one would receive through Keating. Among others Brownie has had training from and with Keating. The training is planned for November and will be all day Saturday and Sunday at $75. per day. It is looking as though this is going to be open to all but designed to be convenient for California residences. We have a building for free in Arroyo Grande which is bout half way between LA and San Fran on the coast. It is a great vacation area if anyone wants to make a holiday out of it. Year round temperatures run 72 degrees. All supplies are provided but it is suggested you bring wrist protection as there will be allot of contact with your wrist.
The class is open to beginners and experienced alike, different skill levels will be matched up and the whole day is dedicated to paring back and forth based on the knowledge imparted by our expert. Training is based on everyone's need to protect themselves with knife and hand in today’s uncertain environment. This is not a lecture; this is hand to hand based on real life experience.
Brownie has agreed to fit us in his busy schedule...among many others Brownie trains Police Officers so this is a great opportunity to all those who can take advantage of this training. There are probably 15 "maybes", but we need to start firming the number up and get deposits. Because of the size of my office Class is limited to the first 15 who give a "for sure" followed by a deposit.
Any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

Well, looks as though this is really going to happen! We have 8 for sure and around 12 maybe's. The training will be held in Arroyo Grande, I will post directions when we get closer, but as mentioned it is on the coast about half way between SF and LA, off Hwy 101 in San Luis Obispo County (about 60 miles north of Santa Barbara). It will be the second weekend in November, 2003.
When we have the 15 maximum we will be getting 50% of the money up front for the deposit. To keep track add your name to the list by coping and pasting it in the next slot and post it on the forum so others can see if there is any space left.

As soon as we get the final four spots filled we will be getting a $75. deposit from each to hold our position. I talked to someone who has had training from Brownie and he said in the two short days you feel competent to handle your knife and comfortable in self defense situations.

I'm certainly interested, but like Psssniper, I don't think anything north of Los Angeles counts as So Cal.
I'm in San Diego, and would be more interested in a more local location. I won't sign up for this one. AG and SLO are too far for a week-end class for me.
If there is enough interest that two classes are formed (one calling itself So Cal and one actually *in* So Cal) then let me know. <g>

Well, it took 10 to make a full class, and we have 12 so we better book Brownie before it is too late. We need to collect a 10% deposit, so each member needs to send $75. to reserve their place.
Brownie has asked me to collect, but if anyone is uncomfortable with that the money can be sent directly to Brownie. I can accept Paypay, but they charge me 3% so a total of $77.25 would need to be sent.

Here's the story. We have this friend, who is a self-proclaimed communist. He beileves communism is a good system. Seriously. Anyway, he was visiting here when I told my dad I needed the 50% deposit soon, and he got involved in the issue. We all had a discussion, and he convinced my parents to rething not only the knife class, but even letting me carry the knife!:uhoh: He's gone, so I have to try to persuade my parents with facts and logic. Bear with me, I'm trying as fast as I can. So August 15 is the deadline? I'll try to work with that. PLEASE save a spot for me, I'm trying. Maybe set the limit to 11 or 12? Please?

Well, a least you learned one lesson...when to chose your fights! So, along those lines, do your parents have any friends that you think would side with you on this issue? Do your parents lean that far to the left or communism that they acually give credience to his advise?

Hi Speed,
You need no former training in defensive knife to attend. In fact we will be taking the class through unarmed against a knife for a full day. The second day will continue with some basic knife to knife combatative skills and then finish with a review of the two days for a few hours late on that Sunday.
I would suggest bringing a leather gauntlet or an ace bandage with you for the wrist the knife is held in, as well as eye protection.
I'll have the training knives with me, no need to worry on what you will be using. The training will be concentrated on folders for defense and not include long knife techniques. I may show everyone a few quickly later on Sunday but we will be concentrating on small folders for defense when the knife to knife is happening.
I believe that one needs solid unarmed skills against a knife before we go to knife to knife defensive tactics. Everyone wants the knife to knife and they get plenty but the unarmed skills is most important.
Hope to see you there.

Time is short to sign up and get into the scheduled class thats coming up in November.
HR forum member Bruz has stated a few people previously "good to go" have scheduling conflicts. We are down to 6 confirmed and we'll need 10 to make this happen.
I'll give this until Tuesday Aug 19 for others to sign up and get their deposit in to Bruz [ or at least commit to sending the funds ] or I'll cancel the class and Bruz will refund the players who have submitted their deposits.
