What's the size difference between the 2 O.A.L and height wise? I've fondled them both briefly but not back to back. Anyone have any side by side photos?

7.5in length, 5.5in height for a real commander
7.9in length, 5.12in height for the browning

The people in the coffee shop here will probably be very annoyed if I pulled my 1911 out for pics.

Sizewise, they are fairly comparable, (the Hi Power actually being more equivalent to the Gov't model). The Browning can actually fit in most 1911 holsters, even with a thumbsnap. The slides are slightly narrower. One thing you do notice is that the HiPower grip does feel shorter, the height is shorter, and I think the tang is a little thicker.

I have a Browning Hi-Power Mark III and a standard 1911 (not Commander). I prefer the Hi-Power because I feel it is more accurate and is easier to take down for cleaning. Like all of us, John Browning learned from experience and did a better job when he designed the Hi-Power. The only problem is that you need to remove the magazine safety (or have it done) to improve trigger pull smoothness.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but you also have to consider that one is a .45 ACP and one is a 9mm.

Not to mix apples & oranges, but my "standard" 1911 and my BHP are very different in how they shoot - you know you're shooting a .45 with the 1911, while my BHP is just plain sweet. I love them both.
