I am considering buying a new handgun (xd357) chambered in 357 sig but I am hesitant for a couple of reasons, 1. will the bottlenecked case have to be trimmed after each shot like most bottleneck rifle cases 2. having to lube the cases prior to resizing 3. bullet setback, though I would primarily be reloading with rainier ballistics 115gr and speer gold dot 125's and possibly the 124gr hornady xtp.

If I could reload each case 4-5 times without having to trim then I would be all for the 357 sig round.

(1) No trimming needed. (2) Lubing is no big deal, I still lube everything other than 45 ACP. (3) Set back will not occur if you support the bullet with the powder.

I have never had a set back with the 357 SIG .

I thought it would be a pain to load 357SIG, so I put it off for a long time.
It isn't, and the only thing that takes even a little longer about it is lubing yer cases.
Only 2 dies needed!

I've been reloading the Sig round for about a year. There are like 3 things to watch for when reloading this round....1.>Use the correct shaped bullets. 2. Use a high bulk powder that almost fills the case. 3. Set your resize/decap die low enough that it resizes the entire case, and just touches the shellplate when the handle reaches the end of it's stroke. Lubing is no big deal, just use a light dusting of a good spray lube, like the dillon one. I've reloaded some of my brass 10 times already and it still looks good. The cases were designed to handle the 40k psi that the round can produce, and contrary to what you read all over the internet, it is not simply a .40 s&w case necked down....

I guess it just seemed to me that I would have to trim the 357 sig like I do my .270 win bottleneck cases after I shoot them each time or every other firing. Not having to trim sure makes the 357 sig round alot more appealing.


What powders do you recommend? I would prefer Blue dot as that is what I reload in my 357 mag gp100. Also, how about Alliant Power Pistol?

Blue dot works great in the round, it is very loud and shoots a large orange flame, probably like you are used to seeing in your 357 mag. It's difficult to meter well in many powder measures though, my 550b doesn't still varies by .3 grains despite my best efforts. Power Pistol, Accurate #9, Blue Dot, and Vhitavouri N350 are all great powders for this caliber, all metering well in the powder measure except Blue Dot.
