Daughter Shoots for First Time!

Spent a great day in the Olympic National Forest with family and a friend. Burned through ALOT of ammo. The SA 1911 is up to around 3000 rounds with absolutely no problems, the new Ruger P95 is at 500 rounds, same story: 0 failures. Did a lot of double and triple-tap training without hearing "Hey, that's uncontrolled rapid fire . . . you're off the range!"

Best part was my six-year old girl wanted to try shooting. Guns are such an everyday part of her life (because she sees me concealed carry every day and usually helps me by handing me stuff when I'm cleaning or tweaking) that I was kind of surprised. I was hesitant at first but then I remembered my dad, an immaculate Remington Nylon 66, and another six-year old out in a field in Western Kentucky quite some years ago. I didn't have a .22 with me so we settled down with the Ruger P95. After a good talk-thru I left her handle it (unloaded) and then we loaded it and with a little help from daddy she fired her first shot . . . about three feet high (target was a piece of aluminum sheeting about 2' x 2'). She braced herself, screwed up her courage and fired her second round . . . PLING! She was so excited (probably less excited than me, though) that I had to be careful to get the gun away from her so she could jump around!

Unless you're a daddy, this post may sound kinda weird but for me it was a big day!!!

I remember when my son shot for the first time. He carried his target to bed with him that nite. You have a right to be proud of your daughter.

It's hearing stories like this, that make me wish my dad was into guns, and had been when I was growing up. It also motivates me to be a dad (when that day comes around) who takes my kids out shooting. I want them to at least have the OPTION of having the experience.

I take a lot of females shooting for their first time. They often do better than men for the first time. I also look forward to taking my children shooting if they want to. I am building up my collection while I am still single so I can tell the wife that I have had that gun forever and just never really shot it when I buy something new.

When my daughter was in college and moved from the dorm into an apartment, I gave her an ancient south american trade-in S&W model 10-nickel plated with a butter-smooth action from wear. The last time she and I was at the range together, she was shooting it at coke cans and doing a fantasitc job. Guy in the next lane came over and said "Da--, I sure don't want HER shooting at ME!"

Made me proud cause THAT IS THE POINT!! HEHE!

I AM a dad (used to be a daddy, but now I'm a dad -- that's the way it goes).

My almost 15 year old goes off to a private school in another city this fall.

She has agreed to report on books on female self-defense I choose for her -- mostly non-firearm self-defense -- she's too young to carry even she she wanted to.

That is, she will write a 3 page synopsis on each book, detailing the main points and then giving her opinion (we have been home-schooling her up to this point).

We will do the same with some tapes.

And she has agreed to come shooting with me, just to try it!

I promised her my 22LR if she takes to it and enjoys the shooting!

I can't tell you how happy I am about that!

I loved your story, minute_of_torso, especially the part about her jumping around after hitting the target.

But you forgot to describe to us how YOU jumped around!

Life is good, ain't it?

I took my daughter to the range last November. It was great. She shot my mini-14 and really had a ball.

At Christmas we went to see Mam-ma and Pa-Pa in OK and she got to shoot Mam-ma's M1 Carbine.

Since then we have gone several times to Swan Creek and Skyline. One day she'll be ready to shoot my SW 457. :)
