Regarding the Sistema from here: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=248752

Took it out shooting this evening, and this sucker's grip safety/hammer bit me about 200 times. My hand looks like a cricket with a shotgun got trigger-happy. :cuss: Shoots just fine, though, even if the sights are nearly impossible to use due to their state of disrepair and size. :)

Anyhow, I was talking to an old guy about what might be done, and his two suggestions were to either get a beavertail grip safety, and/or remove the spur on the hammer.

I refuse to do either. I love the way this gun looks, and permanently modifying any bit of it is out of the question.

However, I might be open to the suggestion of getting an aftermarket hammer on which I can reduce the spur to my heart's content without risking hurt to the gun. Can this be done by a newbie like myself, or is installing and fitting a new hammer something best left to my gunsmith? (The quote in my signature line's there for a reason.) I as thinking of using the most basic one on this page: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=8727&title=1911+AUTO+HAMMER

And while I'm at it, where can I find a rear sight that's a near-exact copy of the original? I can see it just fine, but the amount of damage is... well, disconcerting. :( (This I will leave to the gunsmith.)

Wilson drop in grip safety and CMC commander hammer and sear are easily inserted. I suffer fron hammer bite. Save original parts. daleltayor@att.net

I wouldn't modify that hammer, They're getting to be worth money. It represents a design from the tiime when people carried the pistol with the hammer down, and cocked it for the first shot. The least expensive solution is to install a hammer of the post-World War Two period, and slim the underside of the spur. You may or may not end up shortning it. Getting a wide grip safety may be desireable, but it isn't necessary.

I couldn't resist replying to a thread named after me!

Just to be relevant -- I think Old Fuff gave good advice.
