Got a new Seecamp today, for a pretty good deal ($550 NIB, a steal for MA)!

Anyway, is it ok to use Ball ammo for range shooting? I know it won't cycle ball b/c of the extra length, but is it ok for single round loading? I don't want to damage the gun.

-----
For carry I've heard about Silvertips, Speer, and Hornady. Any other good carry rounds?

Thanks.

Use silvertips only.

PMC Eldorado Starfires. They're a JHP and slightly less than the Silvertips.

If you can't shoot FMJ, you got an expensive shootin' iron there mister !

I purchased a new one last month and the dealer said to only use Silver Tips. That's what Seecamp tells them.

If you can scrounge up a few rounds of .32 ball, try it in your Seecamp. It won't hurt the gun.

The problem is that Seecamp designed to the gun around the .32 Silvertip. At the time he built the gun, that round offered the best combination of price and performance. Its very unlikely that other rounds will cause the gun to function correctly, however.

If you find that something else functions, then use it at the range, but it may be cheaper, over the long run, to just by Silvertips in bulk.

One of the advantages of the Kel-Tec P-32 over the Seecamp: when you get one that works, and the vast marjority of the folks I've talked with have one that works, it'll shoot anything!

That and the fact that shooting a Kel-Tec P-32 doesn't HURT, and shooting a Seecamp often does. The two Seecamps I shot were not pleasant buggers to shoot.

I had thought I read that the latest production Seecamps will chamber and fire ball.

On the other hand, I doubt this gun was intended to be practiced with much at all. Sure, it's all steel, but frame battering may still be a factor. This is a carry gun only. Not much of a pleasure shooter.

Some ammo other than Silvertips is OK in Seecamps. Believe Magsafe is another. Larry Seecamp says Gold Dots are fine:

Ok, I dont have a Seecamp, but I do have an Autauga MKII...

From what I understand, the Autauga is a Seecamp knockoff, and actually borrowed many of the Seecamp patents. The instruction manual also reads:
recommended ammo winchester silvertips, or other high quality factory hollow points. Hollow point only.

I have fired just about every HP through it EXCEPT silvertips.

RBCD performance plus (not actually HP, but same profile as silvertips, and a light weight bullet.)
Magtech JHP
Federal JHP
etc etc...

No malfunctions at all.

I have also shot Magtech ball ammo through it...exactly 42 shots....to qualify with it...it is what the range insisted I use...Had a few nosedives....

So since then, nothing but high quality factory HPs for my Autauga...and it performs flawlessly.

BY the BY...I actually think the RBCD +P ammo has the lightest recoil, if you can believe that...and if you can afford that..:( expensive stuff...but perfroms excellent, and with great ballistics.

"I had thought I read that the latest production Seecamps will chamber and fire ball."

This is a brand new 2003 production gun.
Ball will chamber, but only one will fit in the mag. You cannot fully load the mag with ball ammo, b/c of the length.

Well, I guess I was misinformed.

the gunshop owner I worked for had sevral seecamps before and he pointed out that there is a spacer on the breach face that can be removed to fire ball ammo. I haven't looked at a seecamp for 4 years or more so I might not remember correctly but take a peak and tell us what you see.

Just curious, but is the Seecamp designed for the shorter HP rounds to avoid rimlock issues?

No spacer. It actually appears that the frame and barrel are machines from a single piece of stainless steel. This includes the breech face.

Silvertips funstioned ok, but some wre keyholing.
Gold Dots I think worked better.
I did not try any ball tonight.

Not sure of his intent of HP only. I think he designed it around the Silvertips thinking that was the best defense round at the time.

The Seecamp does have a spacer but it is in the magazine if you take it apart will see what I mean. As far as functioning the most critical factor is the preasure of the load and the brass as the Seecamp has a ring in the chamber to retard blowback. You can try it for range practice (had a friend make up some ball for me and we played quite a bit with no trouble.
