Hi, I have an oppurtunity to buy a 70s era colt commander.I havent been given a price on it yet but when avaliable I have first dibs on it. It has a lot of holser wear but seems pretty tight otherwise,it was carried alot but not fired alot,Novak sights but otherwise all stock. What would be a fair price on this? It would be my first 1911 type pistol and I have been wanting to get one for some time now. Thanks

mokster, there are lots of factors to consider...
First does it pass all the safety checks?
Is this a Commander (alloy frame) or Combat Commander (steel frame)?
Is it blued or satin nickel?
You say it has holster wear, but how is the frame-to-slide fit?
How is the bore? crisp rifling?
To give you an idea, I recently bought a well worn blued Combat Commander. It had plenty of holster wear, but wasn't shot much. I paid $410 for it. That was a really good deal. Also, look on gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com for Commanders in similar condition to get an idea of what they are selling for.

Its a blued commander and its the lightweight model. Though I havent fired it yet it passes all the checks and seems nice and tight.Any opinion on the model itself?

I really like the early lightweight Commanders.
I have an early (1955) Commander in 9mm that is super sweet and I've been looking for one in 45 to go with it. I have two Combat Commanders in 45, but the weight and balance of the lightweight frame really works well for me.

I prefer the Combat Commander (steel frame) myself. To answer your question they all go for about $500 at the moment.
