Styer Scout Owner/Users Weigh in

June 1, 2003, 09:32 PM
Let me start out by saying that I am not looking for a debate on the validity of the scout rifle or Cooper's theories. I have used scout rifles (not a Steyr though) enough in the field and on the range to have formulated my own opinions on the subject. It works for me and I like it. I know the scout rifle topic always inspired great debate at TFL! :)

I am considering buying a Steyr Scout and would like to hear from those with first hand experience with the rifle. Any issues with parts breakage, bolt binding, light firing pin strikes, accuracy, etc.?

Any first hand experience, good or bad would be greatly appreciated!

If it's an SBS action I'd like to hear about it.

Have you checked out Fr. Frog's page:

I've owned one of the first batch of Steyr Scouts. Accuracy hovers around 1" at 100 yards, varying between 3/4" and 1-1/4", but consistently in that range with good ammo. I had one light strike with one cartridge of military surplus ammo during my first range test session. I have never had a light strike since, but then I've only used factory hunting ammo and my own handloads (why would you buy an expensive rifle and shoot cheap ammo through it on a regular basis?)

I find the rifle's ergonomics work well for me and it is my preferred light hunting rifle. I also like the heavy reticle, which helps compensate for the small objective in dim light.

You have a PM.

Also several threads on TFL about this, I posted there about my Scout.

Mines the SBS HBC (heavy barrel carbine) Tactical and it's great.
I put the ten shot mag adapter on it just cause I like it.
Incredible out of the box trigger. I put a Leupold 3.5-10x40 on it in Leupold dual dovetail rings.
Regularly shoots shoots sub .5 MOA 3 shot groups with Black Hills Match and best so far is .39.
If I can do that with it, it has to be capable of better.
Functioning has been perfect and whoever designed the Steyr magazines knew what he was doing.

Thanks for the input. My dealer says he can get me the rifle alone for $1050. If I can get it at that price I think I'll jump on it.

That HBC looks like a great rifle. What is the weight on it?

Well, it ain't light. The barrels only 20 inches but it is medium heavy. With the scope and Eagle stock pack and all it probably reaches 8 pounds empty. Maybe a little less.
