Just joined this morning after lurking for a few months and I wanted to say hello and introduce myself.
For starters, I am 37, married and the proud father of 2, 16 year old twins (1 boy, 1 girl) and a very happy 6 year old boy. I'm former mil (15 years, USAF, command post controller), but I currently work in the IT field at a local university. I own a single firearm, a 12 ga. mossberg 500 which I shoot as often as I can.
I look forward to learning from the vast wealth of knowledge to be found here in THR, and sharing in the camaradrie to be had amongst it's members.
I choose the handle cee_squared because I was in the command and control career field for 15 years. Plus, it sounds cool! ;)
Once again Hello and I'm glad to be counted as member of The High Road!!

El T,
We got a new guy here - okay?
It would not hurt you to sacrifice your sushi (bait) so we could catch lots catfish and see how well this new guy does cooking us catfish.
Of course while he cooks, we advise him on guns for his kids.
Work with me here...:p

El Tejon,
We need someone to show the young and nubile at this shindig how to roast marshmellows . Tell you what, you take them over to the woods and show them how to pick a proper marshmellow roasting stick and how to whittle it correctly.
Each one teach one. :)

Hey All! Thanks for the warm welcome.
SM, EL T,
Let's skip the burgers, hotdogs and marshmallows. You two bring the rods, bait, and a keg or two of beer. I'll fry some buttermilk battered catfish and make some homemade hushpuppies with coleslaw. We'll invite a few friends and have a real party!! :)
It's funny my oldest boy has no interest in shooting sports whatsoever, my baby girl is another story. She goes with me to the range every chance she gets, and has even fired my mossberg on several occasions. She has even expressed a desire to one day own a shotgun. I'm really just getting into the sport, and my lack of significant experience with my own shotgun is the main reason she does not have one right now.
I've been looking for a class that the two of us could attend so we can gain both confidence and skill plus get some father daughter time to boot. But I'm not having much luck finding one. I'm gonna have to find one quick. Because the pride in my chest is somewhat diminished by the jealousy I feel when I see her and my mossberg all snuggled up next to one another at the range. :fire: :)
Seriously though, is there any such thing as a (and please forgive my terminology) family shotgunning classes that would be suitable me and my daughter? We have dreams of a father daughter 3-gun team and I'd be grateful for any suggestions that can get us closer to that reality.

I would seriously look into skeet range , especially with some ladies that shoot together.
You don't have to shoot registered targets, just shoot for learning and fun!
Now I will suggest letting the ladies assist daughter with gun fit and all as ladies are built different and have some concerns men don't.
I mean dad taking some instructions from a qualified male, daughter from a qualified female(s) and win-win situation.
Often times there are League Shoots. Most often the "teams" are new shooters combined with seasoned shooters.
Main thing is having fun.
Oh, the teams take turns doing a meal. So if you and daughter are on the same team (just request such) then more quality time about the whole shooting experience is shared and all. I mean you two doing some meal preparation and shooting.
Oh they have Ladies Leagues, and Ladies vs Men. Now this is a lot of fun with family "rivals".
Prizes for best meal and preparation, even costumes and all.
Now seeing and hearing about all this , might be the thing that gets the boy interested, often does. Especially when boys notice "girls" and "girls shoot guns". :p
Main thing is safety, having fun and by letting seasoned ladies assist daughter with gun fit ( they will have plenty of guns to see what she does best with in various price ranges) daughter will get started off right.
Now even though I am a guy, I have assisted lots and lots of ladies.
I cannot express into words how one feels to see lady , no matter the age take up shotgunning, shooting skeet and oh my goodness- that first dove hunt is memorable!
Watch a young lady shooting skeet/ dove hunting with Dad, Uncle, Grandpa... is a sight to behold!
There is more to responsible firearm ownership than firearms - me
Having the ladies serve spaghetti wearing mustaches pillows under oversize shirts for "beer guts" and "tool belts" for belts is a hoot!
Still the guys won the award for 'best meal' during this league.
Pink waitress aprons, white hose over over blue jeans and the gum smacking - "Sugar what'll you have and I am already taken " line put the guys over the top.
Kinda blows the idea all gun owners are knuckle dragging Neanderthals don't it?
:p

Hiya zoomie, welcome aboard! Settle in and make yourself comfortable, never mind the dogs, sm has 'em all thinking every human in the world hands out beef jerky and peppermints. Turned 'em into danged nuisances too, won't hardly hunt now if you don't bribe 'em...

Welcome cee_squared.
If you let us know where your at, we might be able to point to some somewhere nearby for training. My club does have shotgun classes, open to anyone and everyone. My 13 yo Daughter (shoots her 20ga Mossberg 500 with the Bantam stock, although she has taken a liking to my Stoeger Condor Combo when I put the 20ga barrels on it. :scrutiny: ) and I have gone through several of them together.
Also run do not walk to the nearest gun shops, have that young lady try anything and everything in shotguns and buy her whatever she likes best.
First thou, a little searching will get you some good threads on shotgun fit, semi-autos vs pump (for recoil) some of sm's 28 ga threads (might be a good choice, but be advised that if you and/or her don't take up reloading as a hobby it can get pricey.) Since she seems to have taken to your 12ga Mossberg, lots of good 12ga pump and semi-auto's for her to pick from. You might also want to see if she can try out some 20ga guns, a good pump or semi with the right load goes easier on the shoulder and the cost of (target) ammo is right around the same as 12ga. Not to discourage O/U or SxS as a choice, but let her choose.

Scout26,
I live in the dc/va/md area, any help you can give me locating quality shotgun training would really be appreciated. The range I go to regularly schedules pistol and carbine classes but they do not offer shotgun classes, even though they do allow you to shoot slugs in certain lanes.
SM,
You know, I see alot of women at the range that I go to, it just never occurred to me to ask one of them for assistance. Next time we go to the range I'm going to approach one of them and see if they'd be willing to assist us. It can't hurt to ask.
They also sell firearms at the range I go to, I just don't know what selection they have. Next time I go I'm going to look. Maybe they'll let her shoot a few to see which one she likes best.
Thanks for the advice and help.

Do you get into Tidewater often?
We have the illustrious Ed Clark to teach us Navy boys shotgunning. He teaches civilians, too, and is top-notch. Come to VA Beach, and we'll hook up. (I may have time for you to do some handgunning at the local range, too.)

cee-squared, since you live near Dave McC, I would definitely take him up on his offer of a little one-on-two instruction. I get the feeling that would be as good a training experience as you'll get.

Ahhh, the opportunity to learn from the master.
If only I lived closer to DC/VA/MD. In a few years when my son is old enough to appericate DC and the Civil War battlefields, well do the family vacation to the nation's capital thing. I'd like to make a side trip and spend an afternoon with Mr. McCracken.

Cee Squared,
I am in the area too and I am working on scheduling some time with Dave McCracken (he was so kind to offer and we're just trying to coordinate schedules)
Perhaps sometime we could all meet up because I am just starting to get out and meet people and sometimes for me, it's a little difficult to work up the steam to go alone. I don't mind sitting out a round or so and watch the instruction from a new angle.
Welcome to THR

It's glad I am to pass on what I have learned from others. The big problem is scheduling. Besides my 48 hr plus work week, some family duties loom over my time.
However, I will almost certainly be at the range this coming Saturday and quite possibly the following one. See ya.....
