New Revolver Breaking Record!
El Tejon

In the course of several decades of shooting I have broken more than several revolvers--FN, Colt, Ruger, Smith, etc. However, I have at least shot the guns that I have broken.
Today I set what I believe is a personal best. I purchased a Ruger Blackhawk with a Bisley grip in .44 mag today at Sportman's Warehouse. At the store the weapon was seemingly working fine. The clerk took the gun to the back to get the box and call me in to the feds.
He came back, boxed the gun up and walked me to the front of the store to pay. I paid and then drove home in 10 minutes. I am going shooting tomorrow so I wanted to wipe the weapon down and lube it up.
I attempted to check the weapon before cleaning so I swing open the loading gate and attempt to rotate the cylinder. No dice. It's not moving. I attempt to remove the cylinder pin. No dice. It's not moving. I now had a nice heavy club, but not a firearm.
I took it back to Sportman's Warehouse and they are going to send it back to Ruger for me. The poor kid of a clerk was so agitated that he kept saying "this isn't possible to do with a revovler".:D The counterman said "a week" so in gun dealer terms I should have it by time for the 4th of July weekend.:D
While I've broken several other revovlers (Smith M48 being the last), the last single action I broke was a Colt New Frontier during the summer of 1990. I was shooting when the gun broke into two. That was very exciting experience. However, at least I got my money out of that one since my dad gave that to me as a little kid.
I am now at a zen level of gun breaking, I can break guns by looking at them. BTW, how many posts bearing the statement "single actions don't jam" or "revovlers don't jam" will I read this weekend?:D

Hey man come over lets talk guns, no wait, let me get the safe locked up first.
No, you cannot "see" my guns.
Just kidding man.

I am sure you will read a few, people choose to ignore the fact that all mechanical devices can and will fail. Oh well, good luck with the Ruger. I have, with one exception, always have had very good customer service from Ruger. No the fastest in the world, but good service.

El -Tejon needs a nice wall plague ! :D
El Tejon - you are simply talented! Larry does a nice job of laser engraving, please advise as to what revolver you would like on said plaque.
My Talent is Glocks. I am not allowed to even handle a box with a new one in it.
Last time I did - the guns were fine when they came in, checked in and everything. I open the box and sights fall off and disconnect something or another broke. All I did was open box ( sights off) and hand the other one to gun guy and "it worked 20 minutes ago before you showed up".
I got a theory.
Maybe Revolvers are allergic to Sushi. ;) I dunno, pH levels with your system or something.
I am going with fried catfish and Glocks and me having a problem.
:D
I know - we need to take our Talents on road and get paid somehow.
:D
I have a problem with Craftsman slip joint pliers too. I broke another pair the other day with my left (weak) hand. At least I was wearing gloves this time - them things sting when they break!

Charles, yes, I must admit Ruger has always done a good job on my guns. The last revolver of theirs I broke they called to ask if they could keep the broken stuff. I guess they couldn't believe it either.:D
sm, bah, I've broken Glocks. I just have to think about self-loaders for them to break. Maybe true about the sushi, but I have yet to have sushi this week. However, I do take my fish oil and garlic pill throughout the week. Maybe Omega 3 and 6 is great for my ticker but bad for guns.:D
I have long argued that I should be in the gun testing business. I would travel from gun maker to gun maker and test their guns. If the gun survives me shooting, field stripping and cleaning it, it can survive anything.
"Is the Model _____ a good gun?"
"Why yes, the Model ____ has the El Tejon stamp of approval."

Well, maybe I can put my powers to good use in attempting to conquer the world. You know like Magneto in X-Men?
Instead of using magnetic waves to rip firearms out of government agents, I can render them useless with my powers of breakage.:D

My son bought me the same revolver you are posting about. He bought it at the range where we shoot. It had been shot, mostly with .44 Specials, looked like new but came with no box or manual. Second day it locked up like yours did. Dealer sent it back for me to Ruger, turnaround time was six working days, and came back in a new box with the manual and warnings. Worked (working) perfectly now. They never said what was wrong.

I would get that copyrighted if I were you. I like that!!
Neat little inspection sticker and everything...
I am the guy that actually shot a RG 38 and the lead went down the barrel and not out the sides of the cylinder. [granted this was about the umpteeth one of these guns I had shot that actually did this, as the others always want to spit lead everywhere - except down the barrel].
I am also the guy that not once, but twice was with a LEO officer just hours away from reporting to shift and asked "would you like to shoot my Glock?".
Glocks broke and officers had to use duplicate issue weapon for duty.
I do well with revolvers - Glocks and H&Ks hate me. :p
One pump shotgun I have broken 8 so far. Joke is , if I continue shooting this make and model to 13 is that called a "Breaker's Dozen" . :neener:
Heck - I will have you know I have actually had a whole magazine work in Jennings, Ravens for me too.
Figures.
El Tejon and I need to hit the road or be inspectors. Traveling inspectors sounds good to me. Get paid to travel, shoot and break stuff.

El Tejon you need to work for Ruger or S&W as a QC inspector. If the guns work in your hands, they'll never fail!

Leaving the store, he places the boxed gun to his front and zips up his leather jacket. Getting on his motorcycle, he streaks out of the parking lot and down the canyon hill towards home. As he rounds a corner, he doesn't see the rock that had fallen from the rocky incline above and he hits it with the front wheel of his bike. The box jumps out of his jacket and on the second bounce against the asphalt, it opens, spilling the revolver onto the side road. It, too, bounces several times, first on its grip, then on its barrel and finally a crushing blow to the cylinder crane. Hurridly, he skids to a stop, recovers the box and the gun, and continues on home without incident.
Two hours later he returns to the gun shop. "Hey, man, I don't know what happened, but this think won't work," he says, plopping the gun on the display case. "I thought these Rugers were supposed to be tough!"

I think RUGER is one tuff gun. :scrutiny: I have been told - that you can't blow up a RUGER. :fire: What went wrong with yours?
GOOD LUCK :)

I would prefer that El Tejon be limited to the state of Indiana if not his county , city limits or house whichever is smaller

Possibly the cerk dropped it in the back, bending the cylinder pin?

I am impressed. I haven't been able to do more than rip the deck-raising handle off an MTD mower - but El T has managed to defeat the mighty Ruger.
Now if you can just get a BFR and do the same to it...

You did it AGAIN???????? :neener:
El T, don't take this wrong, but PLEASE stay out of Texas. There are just too many revolvers around down here to take a chance..... (j/k)
Seriously: are you certain that the revolver he took back to the back is the same revolver you brought home? Could there have been a switch of guns, perhaps?

Tejon--
you are never welcome to come shooting with me. I'm too poor to be able to afford the repairs or new guns, unless you'd foot the bills.
You're scary, man. You break EVERYTHING gun-related. Have you managed to break a single shot yet? Or a muzzleloader? Or for that matter, do rocks break when you hold them? I'm just trying to get an idea of what weapons DON"T break after you touch them.

Don't feel bad, I've broken two "can't be broken" Rugers. First was a Vaquero and the second was a SRH. The Vaq never got fixed despite 3 visits back to the factory. It had a similar problem to yours but kept reacurring.

El Tejon,
You should use your powers of good and go join the Brady campaign. Work from within you know?
Crash their servers, jam their pens, lose their phone books, bounce their checks. That way, when you are in the Northern VA area, I will give you 3 different types of revolvers to break. I figure that's a good price to pay for the greater good. :D :neener: :neener:

I once knew a guy with another curse. Not exactly the same thing, but a curse none the less that could relate to firearms. This guy had "evil" hands. Any metal he touched would rust up terribly fast. Which was ironic considering last I knew he was working in a metal shop. I've heard other people say the same, but I've never seen anything like him before or since. He could have a rusty spot on something he touched by the next day, it was pretty amazing.

I have been lucky so far and not broke many. I did manage to "break" an over/under twice. Had the safety fly off the gun once and the second time the hammer refused to reset on different occasions. After a trip back to Mossberg it works fine now.

springmom, I hate to tell ya but from 1995 to 2004 I was in Texas a lot. Don't ever buy a gun from Kerrville, San Antonio or Austin as I might have handled it at one time.:D I tried to go gun shopping in Dallas last year but was flat on my back (yes, I drank the water down there, muy insensato!), but still went shooting with THRers under less than optimal health (and THR member Bane let me shoot his FAL and it DID NOT fall apart).
tiny, great idea! I would crash their phones and computers inside five minutes.:)
I still think the gun companies are missing a beat by not hiring me as a proof tester.;)

Next we see El Tejon marching through bagdad with insurgents all standing up and scratching their heads in puzzlement as their armaments self-destruct in their hands.
Seriously I knew an Air Force Col. who had the same ability with anything electronic. If he actually touched it you could almost guarentee it'd be on the fritz in about a week.
He wore an old mechanical watch
we had to buy him a wireless mouse and keyboard (both of which got replaced several times) to isolate him from his office computer. He sent at least 5 pagers that I knew of to pager heaven. He also "scrambled" at least 7 calculators that I can remember.

He could be a one-man surge. Single-handedly stopping the bad guys in their tracks. Leaving them having to THROW their bullets at our guys. El T, we have found your calling :D :D :D

Ruger was quick! Picked it up today.:)
Looking forward to using this as a skiing gun. Hopefull it will throw a favorite (milder) .44 mag load that I have used against Mr. Coyote and Mr. Crow. I usually take a rife out but sometimes you just want to be unencumbered.:)
Ruger replaced the barrel and redid the timing. I have no idea what would cause that to have them have to do this. Just glad the weapon now works--until I break it again.:D

El T- Now you did it!!! When I get home I'm going to have to dig ALL my ruger wheel guns out and function test them(not a small number of them either).
Don't post things like that!!
Good luck, I hope ruger does well by you.

I had the same thing happen With a Taurus instant back-up. Brand new all locked up. It has something to do with the swing arm, since they replaced mine, put a stainless swing arm and cylinder on a blued frame. Looked dumb so I dumped it. I will never buy Brazilian again.
