I recommend the chest area (heart, lungs and liver) as it's a larger target and doesn't ruin too much meat. It usually provides a one shot harvest and stops the animal from running off. Just use enough gun... 30 caliber or similar.

Check out your state DFG\hunter education\~ They will have a hunter education handbook with pictures. Maybe even sign-up for a course. You'll be pleased with what you learn.

Depending on one's skill level, a head or neck shot is deadly. Lesser skill or longer distance, the heart/lung-area shot works.

Looking at a side view of a deer, for instance, the area from about three or four inches above the belly line up to four or five inches below the line of the back includes the heart and lungs, but you'd want the shot right behind the foreleg. Farther back gets into the "innards".

In the neck of most animals, the spine is about one-third of the way down from the top.
