Fanny packs and the four rules

I jog regularly and I'd like to carry while doing so. From the archives I see that quite a few people like to jog carrying in a fanny pack. While looking at some online, it appears that most of them involve carrying the handgun horizontally. With the gun in such a position, I have to wonder about the four rules. I couldn't possibly plan out a jogging path in which I would be willing to destroy everything the muzzle would cover (I live in a city).

So, what are everyone's thoughts on fanny packs and the four rules?

Great you thought about it, there are several models of pocket holsters that will insure your gun does not fire while in a fanny-pack. If you have a revolver or a DOA with no external safety it is only good sense to use one.

carry with magazine loaded and chamber empty.
Most modern revolvers have a provision to prevent the hammer from
contacting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled.

Only use a fanny pack with a built-in holster which covers the trigger.

Whenever your hand is on the gun, have the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and keep your finger off the trigger.

I carry a round chambered in my Glock because I want to carry the most dangerous and efficient firearm I can lay hands on. If you have an opinion that there are other firearms that are more efficient that a glock, you might be right, opinions being like noses.

If you are worried about loaded Glocks being dangerous, you need to move to a different state. Every cop the I've seen in TN was carrying a Glock. Hopefully the Tennessee LEOs are carrying with a round IN the chamber.

Umm, chestnut ridge, just FYI.....Glocks have a "provision" to keep the firing pin from contacting the bullet unless the trigger is pulled also - a firing pin block, which is disengaged when the trigger is pulled, just like the revolver.....

A Glock has a lighter trigger pull than most DA revolvers - that's why they're considered unsafe. Five pound pull, I think - about as much as a 1911. Longer pull, though.

For the love of God and all things holy, do NOT buy or wear a fanny pack. They haven't been in style for about 20 years and the only people who wear them are geriatric tourists and people who think they're being coy about CCW.

You beat me to the punchline. It's true, they are the heighth of dork chic. I run regularly, having a handgun bouncing around in a fanny pack would not be very comfy. An airweght S&W with a real holster could be an option.

This begs the question, do you really need it where you jog. Can you change jogging locations. Don't get me wrong, I carry everyday but not when I run. It's too much of a PITA for me. When running I carry OC spray, a good knife, and a cell phone, and I only run in the daylight hours. YMMV

A fanny pack or photographer's vest screams "shoot me first" especially if you are carrying on of those dangerous Glocks that go ka-boom in the night, have too light a trigger pull, melt when exposed to plastic solvents, and pass through metal detectors.

One of those "dangerous' Glocks works well in a belly band if you are getting some outdoor exercise.

They haven't been in style for about 20 years and the only people who wear them are geriatric tourists and people who think they're being coy about CCW.When I went on vacation back in Novemeber I used a fanny pack for my film, camera, tissues (my daughter had a cold), etc.; and kept my gun in a belly band. Security folks checked my fanny pack very carefully but didn't pay attention to the rest of me.

Not only do the 4 rules only pertain when handling the gun they are also a set of checks and balances. Typically to have a ND/AD one must violate 2 or more of the rules at the same time.

Not to be a Richard, but if you are this uncomfortable with carrying arms, then perhaps it isn't for you.

Yeah right , who would want to have something dangerous on them?

Fanny packs scream "GUN!" Find another way to carry. I pocket carry a Kahr PM9 (also "unsafe" with a chambered round) in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. Yep, my muzzle covers lots of stuff when ever I sit down or cross my legs, but it is safely holstered and no threat to anyone until I pull it out and pull the trigger.

Here's the deal. A flopping fanny pack has to be uncomfortable while your running. Simply buy a high riding holster and wear a sloppy, shirt tail outside the pants shirt. Get a holster with a snap to hold the pistol in the holster and you're good to go. That's how I carry in warmer months. It's a very concealed carry.
