Well, I had been looking for a 627 with the 5" tapered barrel in the 8-shot configuration with no lock for a little bit. I found one, and picked it up last night, and man is it great. Sure it's an N-frame so it's on the heavy side, but very well balance. The 5" barrel is tapered, and is a "slab side" so that cuts down on the weight, making it non-muzzle heazy.

This is a 627-PC, serial# RJM08**, and when I looked in my 3rd edition S&W catalog from Supica & Nahas it says the 627-PC is supposed to be a 2 5/8" model. When looking in the same catalog, more gun more resembles what is described under the 627-2, except mine does not say ".357 Magnum 8 More" like the book says the 627-2 has. My gun says ".357 Magnum-8 Times". Anyone with info on this, please pass it along.

I also noticed some other strange things about the gun. Like the cylinder stop being the small "disc" shape, and not being milled into the frame as one piece coming down from the recoil shield. All the 627's I've seen have do not have the cylinder stop mine does. Also the gun has a frame-mounted firing, but there is a little "nub" on the hammer, but this "nub" does not impact the firing pin stud. This "nub" impacts just below the firing pin stud, and I think it's this "nub" that causes the hammer to not rest fully forward, making the gun look like it's partially cocked.

I have included pics here to show the gun, and specifically some of the areas I found odd that I have been talking about. But, I can't wait to get this thing to the range, I imagine it should shoot like a champ.

Thanks.

Since it's a PC and pre-lock, I wouldn't have hesitated grabbing that one up. Beautiful gun. ;)

My 627 looks just like that, but the barrel flats and a couple other places are polished.

Yes, the cylinder is polished on mine, except for the flutes. Also the side of the barrel is polished as well.

rbmcjr- mine looks just like yours, with the polished areas, and the hammer "slightly cocked". How does she shoot?

Love my 627! I don't know what I would do without it.

The JM 627-3 V-Comp I traded for last spring has the same dimunitive 'ridge' that my other frame-mounted fp models have, not the pronounced nub yours has. Also, it has a ball detent on the crane, instead of the usual detent on the ejector rod's end. I was told it came from '01 - and I do feel fortunate for the trade, as it was LNIB, with both the comp & blank - and lots of moonclips.

These things are unreal. Fantastic trigger. The original owner said he might even find that 'horrible' original JM grip - which I love, of course - and get it to me. He loves my trade - a 6.5" LNIB Heritage 24, which I had bought new and wouldn't shoot... it was too pretty. This thing is a bit uglier, IMHO, than the tapered non ported barrel variants - and it's SS, of course, so it gets shot a lot!

The reversed ramp, not really a Patridge front sight, is interesting, but I may just get more use, in my plinking, from a HiViz - where did that dovetail HiViz come from, Grandmaster B?

Congrats, Bob79!

Don- that's what it says in the SCSW about the 627-2, with it saying "...8 more".

I called Smith & Wesson and they said my 5" was made in 1997, and my 3" was made in 2001. I think I'm going to have my 3" unfluted cylinder sent in to get a fluted cylinder. I just don't like the looks of the unfluted cylinder, and it adds more weight, which I don't need. 8-shot 627's are great guns, too bad they cost so much!
