any three inch turkey load in a 12 gauge with a super full turkey choke will kill a yote. Preferably #4 shot or larger if you simply must use a shotgun. I prefer a .243 personally.

While pheasant hunting last winter, a large coyote got up a couple yards ahead of me in heavy brush . 1 load of high brass # 7 1/2 shot out of my 12 ga. rolled him at 20 yards as if hit with an '06. Totally disabled from the shot, I administered a finishing load up close to send him onto preditor Heaven. Moral : You need not any special thermo nuclear shotgun loads to dispell coydogs within reasonable range . Obviously heavier shot would be preferable at greater distances.

We use 3 1/2" #4 buck with a turkey tube . You don't want to shot too many of them .

In our part of the world, it would be physically impossibe to shoot " too many " coyotes . Even if it wasn't , considering as many deer fawns, turkey, pheasant and quail eggs & chicks coyotes consume , not to mention small calves that stray, I'm trying to think of a reason too many would ever be, well, too many. I'm not saying I'd want a species wipe out, but considering the population of coyotes here and the predidation they do to our game, we take as many as we can.

Geo,
RKellogg was refering to shooting too many 3 1/2" #4 buck loads. As it is tough on the shoulder.:)
I've got a friend who is queer for shotguns and coyotes. He uses a 10ga with BB. They are pretty effective out to about 30 or 40 yards.

I'd only be able to shoot them with 000buck around here if I HAD to use a shotgun as the buggers are to (Wiley) and won't get within 50 yards or so.

I hit one at about 25 yards with 7 1/2 once (was dove hunting, all camoed out leaning against a tree). He went down, got up, ran off. :banghead: But, I promised the land owner I'd shoot any coyotes I saw, so I did. I prefer shooting 'em with a rifle. I've hit 'em out at 350+ before, can't reach that far with a shotgun.

ever try the "dead coyote" T-shot from hevi-shot? I've heard really good things about it....like coyotes dropping like rocks at 60-70 yards from a 12 gauge.

So when one shoots a Coyote, what does he do with it?

Mangy? Burn it/bury it.
Nice pelt? Skin and tan/sell, leave the body. Other critters will dispose of it.
Poor pelt? Leave it lay. Other critters will dispose of it.
