View Full Version : Bulk Target Ammo...No Reloads

I've search the forums, and after 30 minutes, I'm just going to ask. Sorry if this is a repeat.
I'm tired of buying a box of ammo at range prices for my .45 every time I go there to shoot. They do not allow reloads, so bulk reload ammo is not an option. I'd like to get 1000 (maybe 2000) target rounds for my Glock 21. And if possible, I'd like to just order it online. All my range carries for that is Independence .45 ACP 230 grain, and I'm fine with that brand, but I'd like it cheaper. Any suggestions?

How much are you paying for it and what location?

WOW! Okay, not that big of a difference in price between target ammo.
However, I just bought a 20-count box of hydrashok for $22 at a local store. I see at cheaperthandirt.com I can get a 50-count box of hydrashok for $22. Am I missing something here???

interesting -natchez had some stuff for almost half off what Midway and Sportsman's guide had it for. Exact item.
Shipping seems reasonable.
Wonder if he is just selling out the last of older stock and will increase like everyone else.
Pays to shop around I guess.

I see there are some CCI Blazers for $8.99. Anyone shot that through a Glock? Seems like I should buy them out at that price.:)

Your range should allow "factory reloads" such as Miwall. I have used Miwall and though it is of mixed headstamps, it shoots great.

Just bought 10 boxes at 8.99 - works fine in an HK and my 1911's. Brass case (reloadable) is fine too.
And yes, those are old like 2005 prices for that ammo. Look it up on midway - I think they are $7 more per box.
(Don't tell anyone though, they may raise the price)

Yes, an acquaintance works for ATK, he supplied the ammo and the G22's, we then shot a dueling tree, poppers and a swinger... It all (~300-450 rounds, I wasn't really paying attention to how many mags I went through  ) worked.

Per the above...
Yeah... some ranges don't allow reloads due to Liability (so they say). :scrutiny:
I have been to ranges that do not permit shooters to keep their Brass too. :uhoh:
NUTS to that! They sweep it up and sell it..... :fire:
Find a range that permits reloads, pick up every loose round you see and sort it.
(unless other shooters are saving their brass too).
I bulk reload for a fraction of the cost of any store bought ammo and my failure/misfire rate is VERY CLOSE to ZERO....

I'm not interested in reloading myself. However, can sell empties? Who would buy that?
And oh yeah, my local range doesn't allow you to pick up your empties either. It sounds like I need a new place. Problem is, my range is so close...I could shoot it. The next closest range is a county away.

Sportsman's Guide has a good deal on Fiocchi ammo in 250-500-1000 count packages. Once you get above $200 (if you're ordering in serious bulk), shipping is a flat rate of $19.99.
SG Fiocchi comes out about the same as Natchez Blazer Brass or Federal American Eagle all considered (based on .45ACP).
Georgia Arms looks interesting, but it appears their Canned Heat practice ammo + shipping would be more expensive than any of the above.

I'd look for another place to shoot. I only shoot reloads and lead bullets at that.

Well, if you don't shoot that much, I guess the point is moot.
Bottom line is... it's your dollar. I encourage reloading to all my buddies.
Take ownership of the hobby... it's easier than you might imagine, fun and rewarding.
Ranges sweep and sell brass to make cash... ZERO overhead there, pure profit.
Occasionally I will go in to see what they have. The place local to me used to sell brass by the pound. You pick and sort, they supplied Surgical gloves and a bag...
Depending on the caliber you shoot, it can be economical, just depends on their pricing. I shoot 10MM and that is expensive brass... Getting it by the pound is CHEAPER than through a dealer/e-bay.
I shoot plenty and reloading is the ONLY way I can afford that much trigger time. Toss in what my son and our mutual friends shoot.... it adds up. Of course our range guests insist on tossing cash in the Kitty, which helps a lot.
They realize a good deal when they see one.

"...They do not allow reloads..." I'm with MCgunner. Is changing ranges an option?

deals like you've found on Hydra-Shok. Go for it. And, if you can find Blazer for $8.99 a 50 rd. box, get as much as you can afford. It's good ammo and that was a great price 15 years ago.

I ordered 1000 Blazers. Man, the wife is going to...wait a minute...she doesn't need to know.
I don't see the need to get more Hydra-Shok until I practice with the 5 HD options I have right now. I have some low-recoil Hydra, some +p, and other brands as well. Before I go buying a crapload, I'd like to see what I like. I haven't shot too many HD options from my G21. But I will soon.

Did you pick up 1000 rounds of the Blazer "Brass" or the aluminum cased?

The non-reloadable alum. If I can't pick them up off the floor at my range anyway, why not?

Famine,
I have never heard of a range that didn't allow you to pick up your own casings. Also, why don't they allow bulk ammo? I have a fix for the bulk ban, just save a lot of boxes from factory stuff and put the bulk stuff in the boxes before you go and shoot. As for them keeping your brass, it sounds like they are selling to for a profit. I have no problem with a range selling the unwanted and left there brass but prohibiting you from recovering the brass you paid for and shot seems a bit unfair.

The indoor range I go to does not let you keep your brass either. I don't mind because its only 8 bucks to shoot for as long as you want. Sometimes me and the wife spend 6 or 7 hours up there shooting all for 8 bucks each. The other indoor ranges I have called tell me its 15 bucks each per hour :what: but you can keep you own brass there haha not worth 90 bucks each to shoot there for 6 hours just to keep some brass IMO

Never heard of any range keeping your brass.
All of them around here want you to clean up after yourself, and some of the indoor ones will not let you cross the firing line to retreive brass because the line is always hot.
But other than that, your brass is yours . . . . .

I also buy and shoot Miwall reloads. They work for me and the prices are great as far as I am concerned. Last weekend at the gunshow in Portland, Or I bought 500 .38 spl 158 grn SWC reloads for $64.95. That equals $6.50 for a box of 50. The ammo shoots good, the price is right and I save the brass. The problem is at this price it makes it hard to justihy buying a reloading setup. The $6.50 a box cost is almost the sane or less than it would cost me to buy reloading equipment and supplies. Also my time spent reloading is worth something. I will c ontinue to buy Miwall reloars until something changes the cost. I will have to cross those bridges when I get there.

What if you shoot a revolver? I always keep my brass...as soon as its shot, it goes right back in the box it came in. They gonna make you throw it on the floor?!
That would be my one and only trip to that range. Pure crap.

Gaucho,
It may be true that the cost is almost the same, but when reloding, you have the ability to custom build a load; for target, for your SO, for plinking, for IDPA, etc.
It's also a fun way to spend some time. Researching bullets, cases, primers, OAL, etc.
I reload for more than the price. Also if you are buying someone's else's reloads, you might as well reload your own and be sure of what you're shooting in your valuable gun.

The $8 it costs you, that's not including ammo of course, correct?
Well I guess maybe I should just move or something. My range is $10/half hour and $15/full hour. I can't keep my brass and they don't allow reloads. and on top of that, the cheapest ammo option they have for my .45 is $13.99/50.
Now I understand that more than a few of you have said, "I'd just leave and go somewhere else." Well, the ranges around here are not exaclty like Starbucks. If I don't like this one that is literally 300 yards from my house, then my next option is 30 minutes away. So I'm not sure what I'll do next. Oh well, not looking for answers, just venting.:banghead:

Famine --- Thats just the range fee. Like I said though its 8 bucks for me and 8 bucks for the wife and we can shoot what ever we want with what ever ammo we bring for as long as we want. They open at noon and close at 10pm so we could shoot for 10 hours for 8 bucks if we chose to. To me its not worth paying the other range 15 bucks each per hour just to keep some brass.

I used to go to a range that didn't permit pick-up... :uhoh:
My son (then 14) would sweep up the brass from time to time and dump it in an Ammo can (that I placed in a dark corner)...
Other shooters would cue in on this and do the same thing. :D
At the end of the visit, my son would button up the can and carry it out with our other gear. Nobody ever gave it a second thought
Kind of underhanded, but I wasn't about to just hand over my 10MM empties
so some shyster could sell them back to me :neener:

I've been to a range (ONCE, they never get repeats) where not only must you leave the brass & no reloads, they also say, No aluminum cased Blazer (Even though they sell it for take-out), and you MUST buy range ammo from us (at our price, which IIRC for 9mm ball was about $14/50 and for .45 was about $21/50!) I recall they had yellow box UMC for the cheapest range ammo.
