I picked it up from KYImports.com for $289.00. Once cleaned it is a virtually new pistol, having been carried far more than it was shot.

So I finally took my new-for-me police trade-in pistol to the range. 360 rounds of various ammo, no failures of any kind. Trigger is on the heavy side but smooth. I would say the gun has a tight feel-good.

Only criticism I have would be the sights. At 25 yards I wasn't even on paper. Once I painted the 10 ring with the sight 12 o'clock vs. 6 o'clock I was drilling holes in the center of the 12x12 targe. Once I "zero'd" it in it appeared pretty accurate. I feel the size/firepower and design is a really good compromise and i look forward to carrying it in place of my Beretta Brigadier in the hotter summer days to come. Overall I think it was a good deal.

Now to find a good holster. I have seen a few Don Hume H721 on Ebay( @ $15.00) and wonder if anyone has experience with these. I may save up and just get a blade-tech.

The pick below is not my pistol but it looks just like it.

I always enjoyed shooting my friend's 6906. I don't remember it ever having a malfunction. Sounds like you got a good deal.

I carry one as an off-duty weapon. Excellent accuracy and has never failed to go bang. Only thing I did was put a set of Hogue Finger Groove grips on mine.

Thanks for your report.

Hopefully it will help counter the apparently prevalent myth that S&W 3rd Gen. autoloaders are generally POSs. That hasn't been my experience at all, particularly with the 45XX- & 10XX-series guns.

Although 9mm isn't my favorite caliber, I recently fired a friend's "police trade-in" S&W 5906. It was one of those pistols that was "carried a lot but shot very little." A little holster wear, but that was about it.

Sights were dead-on center of the bull, and the groups were very tight. He's considering having a trigger job done, which would likely only tighten the groups even more.

S&W 3rd Gen's as POS's?????????????????????????????????????

Try 1st and 2nd Gen.....the 3rd Gen guns are not rumored to be anything but good/great guns....and have proven themselves to be exactly that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3rd gen is when S&W finally got the things right..........

Shoot well

"... the 3rd Gen guns are ...great guns ..."

Yeah, I agree.

The contrary view I'm talking about is seen a lot on these boards, like in the current thread running in Handguns/General Discussion, entitled "How Come ...".

If you like Smith autoloaders, you might want to check it out.

I decided to purchase this model after having fired a friends several years ago, just never got around to it. Then they discontinued it so I waited. FWIW, every 3rd gen S&W auto I have ever shot was a flawless performer. I often think that if I replace my Beretta it will be with a S&W 1066 or 1076.

Pain,

Check out KY Imports. They have a "ton" of 6904, 6906, and several other variants of S&W police trade-ins. I already have a co-worker who plans on buying one from KY Imports. I spoke with a couple different people two different times when asking questions and ordering and they both commented on the current quality of the 6906s. I dismissed it to "salesmanship." But when I got the pistol, cleaned it, I thought, man these guys weren't lying! I do feel like I got a virtually new quality pistol for @$300.

Thanks for the replies! Still searching for a holster!

The S&W 6906 is a great gun. Originally came with a stainless 12 round mag. Shop around and you can find mags available. The double action is long but smooth. After the first shot, let off the trigger about a 1/4" and it's ready to go. Quickest recovery and follow up in my experience. Accurate, reliable and good looking. All guns should be as well made. You can trust it with your life!
Enough said.
