Leupold vs Weaver

June 2, 2003, 10:26 AM
I am going to buy either a Leupold VXII 3x9x40 or a Weaver Grand Slam 3x10x40. Does anyone have experience with both of these that could shed some light on which one is the better scope.

For optics... the Weaver is, pardon the pun, clearly the better scope. No comparison. If you're used to a Scopechief or a BSA, then either of them are lightyears ahead. I've owned three VariX IIs and do own two Grand Slams and the Grand Slam is simply a better scope and lower priced to boot. I honstly think that the Grand Slam is more similar to the VariX IIIs than the VariX IIs.

On the other hand, Leupold service is super duper top notch. I bought a rifle with a Weaver CV10 (aluminum tube, current owner's product) that was missing the rubber ring on the ocular. Emailed them asking if I could buy a replacement, got a smart-??? response from a rep about how they can't just give away parts for scopes made 20 years ago. I asked, by email again, if I could be forwarded to another rep because he was obviously far below par for what a customer service representative should be. Never got a response. Emailed twice again over the period of a week. Finally called and talked with someone in service department who wouldn't give me their name. Said the rep I corresponded with was a fine multiple year employee and that I was asking for too much.

If asking to buy a piece of rubber is asking too much, well... I guess I'm just a really demanding jerk. One of the Leupolds I traded into looked pretty good except for a scratch on the elevation cap. I called them, and they sent one out and I had it on the scope in about four days.

But those Weaver Grand Slams sure do look good. :p

Had 3 of the old K-4's and could never get the parallax out of them.

IMO, Leupold has the finest optics, next to maybe Zeiss of anyone.

Having said that, I must add, in balance, that IMO their engineering sucks.

I have both of these scopes, and like them both. No problems. If pressed, I might say that the Weaver sight picture is a little "brighter" than the Leupold, but it may just be subjective. If I had to chose between them now, I would simply purchase the one that I could get for a few dollars cheaper, slap it on the rifle, and go shooting.

Ok, that's kind of what I wanted to hear. I have "free" money to spend at Cabelas from having one of their credit cards. The dilema I was having is that they do not carry the Weaver. Thanks for the replys.

If you've got 'free' Cabela Bux, get the LOO-POLED!!!

Then, you'll have a better warranty and peace of mind to boot...and NO smart-a$$ $ale$-Rip to deal with.:scrutiny:

I'm betting you can get your Leupold---cheaper at SWFA even with Cabela bucks thrown in----Cabelas is a big time rip off----and I live in their home state. Sorry to say.

Was also hung up on by one of their friendly and curtious(sp?) customer service reps---asking a question about UPS fees on hazardous materials----a call back to the supervisor didn't seem to phase them either.

I just throw away the 20 catalogs they send me every year---between their high prices---too high shipping charges---and sales tax I have to pay because they are based in this state----its just a rip off.

Looks like Cabela's price on the 3-9x40 is $269.

SWFA's price on the same scope is the same price and BearBasin's price is $5 less.

SWFA has the Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 for $249 and BearBasin's price on the same scope for $239.

Really, while I do prefer the GrandSlam, if you can get the Leupold for the exact same price through Cabelas, I'd probably get it. I have no doubt that you will be very pleased with either scope so, as TheEgg said, I'd go with whichever you can get for the better price.

if you sort thru this sordid mess, you'll find that you can get better prices on scopes than what you guys are finding...

last leupold i bought because of this mess was $30 less than the best price anywhere else... which will make the leupold less than the weaver...and therefore, an easier decision.

Man, Dakotaskin... I want that 15 minutes of my life back!

Honestly, I'd be interested in a better price on the Grand Slams, but the Grand Slam is still a better looking piece of glass than the VariX II. Even with the prices switched.
