I'm looking for the meanest hollow point round period.
I've used some cheap silver tip 9mm. Ive used Federal Hydrashock in .380; .45; and 9mm. I've also used Winchester Ranger .40cal 155gr.
I like the Ranger, it has some kick to it.
What is the best brand period?
I'm leaning towards Remington Golden Sabers, or PowR'Ball. Any opinions would be great!
I know the question is vague. I'm going to keep it like that so everyone can get there two cents in.

I think that all the premium HP rounds (ranger, golden sabre, gold dot, hydrashock, etc) are pretty effective these days. Avoid gimmicky or 'boutique" ammo.
My priorities are:
Reliability
Accuracy
Availability
Price
Ballistic test performance.

Thanks for seeing my question as what it is. Just a question!
Damn, BlackTalons did all that. Damn! You know his girlfriend still loves him though.

Whenever I see an expanded .45acp Federal HST at about 1" in width I cringe a little.
Then I remember that I am on the giving, not the receiving
end of them and then I smile. :D

All copper hollowpoints.

I think the Corbon DPX line is the best FACTORY SD load out there. The Barnes XPB bullets are the best available and Corbon loads these real hot. The line is extensive too, I use their 9x23 Win. and 10mm for carry, but they've got almost everything covered. It is pricier than run-of-the-mill ammo but well worth it.
If you hand-load, I would recommend using the Barnes XPB for all your SD loadings.
Zundfolge,
You beat me to it but I couldn't agree more.

:banghead: I like Black Hills Red Label in my 38s and 357s. I have never had a failure to fire or a failure to feed. They are a little pricey, but what I like best is not seeing a big plume of smoke clouding my front sight.

Is this a case of censureship to protect us from the truth?
Twenty five years ago the .357 was King. The human body is the same except for the bunch that has never learned to shoot wheel guns.
I sorta like the .44 Remington Mag in 185/200 grain JHP. And I have no data.

"The old Speer 45 cal 200gr "flying ashtray" you can stick a No 2 pencil in the hp" yes, to give the target lead poisoning. :D

actually i guess the meanest bullets i've ever seen in keeping with the .357 magnum vien was some 148 gr. hbwc rounds i reloaded using .357 magnum cases and 5 grs of bullseye under the bullets loaded in backwards........  now that was a serious .38 caliber hollow point!!

"...the best brand period?..." The one that your pistol shoots the most accurately. If you don't reload, you MUST try as many brands and bullet weights to find the one or two that gives you the best accuracy out of your pistol. Nothing else matters.

Well, I've never seen a hp handgun round that reliably expands in human tissues (as opposed to gelatin). I've chatted (internet) with other LEO's who have seen some expand reliably in real shootings, and I believe them....but I've never seen it with my own eyes after viewing hundreds of bullets taken from real shootings.
I have heard that Winchester Silver tips do, in fact, expand reliably in people. The most notable case involves a LEO who shot a perp 5-6 times center mass with 145gr .357 rounds that expanded so well that the perp lived...and killed the LEO with a .22...
I haven't heard of any significant .40 failures involving bullets 155gr and over. The lighter stuff has had some penetration failures. In my experience, anything in .40 cal, ball or hp, 155gr and over, will get the job done. It is one of the best manstoppers ever.
I tend to aggre with Jesse, who said:
My priorities are:
Reliability
Accuracy
Availability
Price
Ballistic test performance.
I would substitute "street record" for test performance, as I don't trust gelatin as a test medium.

30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger Gatling gun. It fires 30mm depleted uranium shells at the rate of 3900rpm each aircraft can carry 1350rounds, but most pilots can put 80% of the rounds in a 20' circle and it only takes about 6 to destroy a main battle tank.

One of the most destructive bullets in existance, the Norweigan Raufoss Mk211 in .50 BMG
These things are illegal to civilians and there is argument whether they should even be allowed under Geneva Conventions. A hit from one of these can literally blow a man to pieces.

The meanest bullet doesn't make up for lack of marksmanship.
I was a LE firearms instructor for alomost 30 years and during that period of time I got to try a variety of ammunition. When I worked for a municipal police department the chief bought the cheapest duty ammunition he could find.
I worked for the Federal goverment and there they kind of rotated their purchases between the major manufacturers so I got to try everyone's ammo. Some expanded better and some penetrated better. I looked for reliabilty and accuracy and after that I wasn't interested too much in expansion. I liked the early WW subsonics in 9mm. Yes they didn't expand well but I found them phenomenally accurate in the S&W autos we carried. I realize to most the accuracy thing is not an issue as they don't shoot that good.
Jim Cirillo, veteran of NYPD stakeout squad, survivor of several gunfights, and pistolero extrodnaire still is in his quest for the perfect bullet and hasn't found it yet.
Just my take.
Just my take.

i doubt any one will cringe at the thought of .45ACP military 230 grain FMJ "hardball", but it has accounted for numbers of BGs of one stripe or another.
sometimes i wonder about all those premium rounds at premium prices. business gets slow and the magic rounds make the register ring again. but i am being a pessimist.
shoot what you believe in and dont shirk range time. a miss is not acceptable, no matter what fills the chamber.

There are many ghosts of dead Nazi and Japanese soldiers who can attest to the killing power of a .45 ACP hardball!!
Plink
February 1, 2007, 07:50 PM
There's no magic bullet. The most important criteria is that it function flawlessly in your gun and that you can shoot accurately with it. Any of the proven premium rounds will do fine. Factor in cost and availability. Avoid mall ninja loads and gimmicky stuff that sounds too good to be true.

My vote goes to the Fang Faces. My friend fired one in .45 into a 12x12x12 block of clay from about 20 feet. It literally SPLATTERED clay from the impact face all over the place, and knocked the block apart into 3 pieces. Not as deep a hole as the Hydro-Shoks lefts, but MUCH wider. I would buy them myself, but $$$ forbid.

The meanest bullet doesn't make up for lack of marksmanship. While that may be true, just arm yourself with a .45 ACP. With the aforementioned HydraShoks, of course. We all know that you don't even have to hit your target. Coming close is more than sufficient.:neener:
