beretta9 February 1, 2007, 12:47 AM I do all of my target practice out in the woods and use only paper targets or clays. When I run across bottles, cans etc that have been used for target practice I try to pickup all I can. Sometimes I come across old refrigerators, stoves etc that have been shot at. What would you do if you ran across one of these?

Mortech February 1, 2007, 02:08 AM I live in the middle of a tree farm , these are common items dump on the back roads I come across all the time ; trash , animal carcasses , old appliances , stolen stripped out cars , meth manufacturing items and abandon pets . There is so much of it I would need a pretty hefty dump truck just to get the stuff within 100 yards of my house , they even found a body nearby a couple of months ago . It really irks me that some people are so careless or uncaring . All I do these days is just hold my nose until I walk into a cleaner area .
vis-à-vis February 1, 2007, 04:39 AM This may seem kind of a random comment, but it is partly inspired by Mortech's speaking of animal carcasses. I spent a number of weeks on a TN farm a couple summers ago. Myself a yankee city boy was surprised to learn they just drag the dead cows to a hill and let the dogs eat them if they wanted. Since then I have wanted to take my weapons and just shoot the hell out of a fresh one. Some may think thats morbid and random, but hey, its 4am and I dont care.
imprezagm4 February 2, 2007, 01:07 PM I don't really run into appliances... but I shot in the woods onetime and came upon a MASSIVE stockpile of coffee cans, I kid you not, there had to be over 20,000 rusted coffee cans in a huge crater... I guess the forest service cleans em up or something?
frostbiker February 2, 2007, 01:27 PM I've seen that type of trash at the end of a county road by a friend's ranch. Kinda dispicable to see such callous attitudes towards other people's land and your own waste. If you have the tools and a pickup truck, why not take the extra effort to haul some of the scrap metal to a local junk metal shop? Might be a great way to fund your ammo budget, or buy your next firearm.
Sindawe February 2, 2007, 01:36 PM I routinely pick up and carry out more than I brung in. Sites I frequent are now almost parklike due to picking up other people's garbage and our groups culling of deadfall for firewood while camping. If I had access to a truck I'd drag out the occasional appliance I run across. I've seen a few of those can dumps as well, but only way back into the forests on very rough 4x4 trails. Those I don't touch since 1) all the cans are heavily rusted and rather hazardous to handle and 2) their age makes them historic artifacts since can's like those have not been commonly made in 75+ years.
BigFatKen February 2, 2007, 01:40 PM I had some trees prunded on a vacant lot I seldom visited. He put the limbs into a pile instead of removing them. The guy who cut the grass started putting clippings there.
Next time I visited in a few years, it was full of trash, refridgerstors, etc.
It tought me to keep a better eye on things. This was in a neighborhood too.
Geronimo45 February 2, 2007, 01:45 PM Ain't scrap copper selling for a good price? A lot of those items can have a considerable bit of copper - work carefully to pull those parts, though - there's snakes and tetanus amid old steel.
beretta9 February 2, 2007, 02:53 PM When I see an appliance out in the woods, I usually shoot a few holes in it. But after reading the threads about target shooting slobs, I got to thinking, if a non-shooter saw an appliance out in the woods they would think its just a cheap moron dumping junk. But if it had a bunch of bullet holes in it would they think a target shooter brought it out there just to shoot at? It costs 20 bucks to drop one off at the dump, and junkyards won't take them. Maybe just cover it up with brush? I really envy you guys with shooting ranges close by.
koja48 February 2, 2007, 07:32 PM Leave the land better than you found it. If logistics are an issue, get help. My club has several clean-up efforts each year. Places to hunt/shoot are getting hard to find . . . best care for what we have . . .
