.94 cents? I hope the cashier had a knife hearty enough to cut a penny :p
So send us a link! I'm curious. I've seen knives (fixed folder and 'otherwise') at dollar stores before but never seriously considered *buying* one..
Oh, and then actually go cut something and tell us if it bursts into flame :)

I've bought one of those. And a more expensive version at the local $.99 Store, an added patriotic graphic on the handle presumably accounting for the added $.05 in cost. ;)
The Walmart one had a rolled edge almost along the whole length, needing a decent sharpening. Unfortunately, I suspect the typical buyer of a $.94 knife probably has limited sharpening skills, especially with serrations. And the grade of stainless used for the blade doesn't help, as a burr is easily formed and a little tricky to remove. The pivot and lockup are a little sloppy, but under use, secure enough. For someone able to sharpen and maintain the edge, I suppose it would be a usable, easily sacrificed, cutter.

Steelcore,
Give us a field report on it when you get a chance.

I love how only walmart gets bashed on gun and knife boards with the made in china digs.
It is not like kmart, sears, target, etc etc don't carry the same made in china crap.
I would bet Walmart sells more made in USA knives and guns than kmart, sears, target, Gander mountain, and Dicks sporting goods combined.
Tell me again why we bash walmart and never mention the other box store retailers that sell the same made in china crap?
Maybe you guys can point me to the place where I can buy a 94cent American made knife?
How about filling me in on the place where I can buy American made stuff since walmart is the great china evil? Which store has all the stuff that isn't mostly made in china?
The walmart bashing just gets boring. It's not walmart that causes everything to be made in china. It is the have it yesterday, consume and destroy attitude in America.
The 94 cent knives we are talking about are a perfect example of this.

I think China-Mart still pays for their overtly false "Made in America" ad campaign while being the leading edge of importing shoddy foreign merchandise, some of it relabeled.
I also like knowing there is no such thing as a 94 cent knife made by Americans. We should have a some pride.
Personally, I go out my way to not buy Chicom sourced stuff, though sometimes it's impossible. It is certainly not in terms of cutlery.
I also just paid about $90.00 more dollars to buy an American made Washburn acoustic guitar rather than a Chinese sourced one.
Screw that slave labor produced junk.

I agree 100% boats.
It just struck me as odd that the same person bragging about a sub $1 knife took a stab at walmart.
I pay quite a bit more for quality things than what a similar low quality slave labor item might cost. It seems that all of the high end things I buy are all made in the USA and all the cheap junk comes from asia.

hwp,
I may be that posts about low end Chinese-made knives bought at those other places just aren't as common. In recent memory I can't recall anyone posting about a knife they picked up at Sears or K-Mart or Target, but we've had a handful of folks post about a kife they either saw at WalMart or bought at WalMart. Probably that more folks go into WalMart than the others.
Opinels and Frosts are good knives at exceptionally inexpensive prices. Heck SM's favorite little Chicago Cutlery paring knives can be had inexpensively. But all of them are also a known quantity. The quality has been established for enough people that they can be vouched for. If someone finds an exceptionally inexpensive knife anywhere we're suspicious of the quality/safety of the knife when measured against known quantities like Buck/Case/Camillus/CRKT/Cold Steel/Timbeline/... who make economical knives as well as expensive ones. Until enough people can vouch for the quality and safety of the kife everyone's going to wonder if the knife is inexpensive or just cheap.
If you've got a $5, $3, $1 knife I'd ask that you give us an idea how it performs so that we know more about it than it was inexpensive. Look at some of the cutting tests performed by Kim Breed in Blade Magazine for ideas on how to normalize the tests and quantify the results.

I noticed those in the camping aisle last time I was at Wal-Mart. The one I looked at, albeit only in the package, seemed like the pivot was coming apart. I was tempted to buy on and play with it a little, see what it could or could not handle, but figured that would be 94 cents down the drain. I am no steel snob either believe you me. I have my share of cheap knives. I just try to choose ones that do their part. The only use I could see myslef having for it is stuffing it in my tacklebox, but I already have a deluxe dollar knife doing that- and I found I'll still usually use one of my good knives.

I should tell you guys I bought a $8 dollar rough rider peanut today at SMKW. It is very solid with zero slop and the blades are perfectly centered in the channels. It has natural bone handles and is very high quality FOR THE PRICE!
I can't comment on the cutting ability or the performance of the 440 stainless because this knife will never cut anything. I am rounding off the edge and point so my 2.5 year old son (that absolutely loves knives and guns) can have his own pocketknife to carry around. If he gets to where he can possible get it open I will put a drop of Gorilla Glue (amazing stuff BTW) on the joint so he can NEVER get it open. He loves to just put it in his pocket and carry it around all day.

hwp,
Great idea. The recent review on the Rangers was very positive. Fit and finish were spot on and the style was classic American slipjoint. They didn't test the blade's cutting ability though, but that won't matter to you son. I helped a coworker find the Victorinox "My First Knife" for his son at Christmas and the little fella was very happy with his first knife.

The Rough Rider is the best put together cheap knife I have handled to date. It is very similar if not a "tad" better fit and finished than a entry level made in USA schrade (uncle henry/old timer) and quite a bit better looking IMO with fluted bolsters and nicely smoothed bone scales. The knife also has match striker pulls.
The thing might fall apart the first time it got used but we will never know.
This knife is better than the made in China Buck pocketknives I have handled. I may get one of these next week at SMKW and try to kill it so we can see how good it really is.
