Confused about cross country laws

I'm still confused about exactly what the rule is regarding transporting a handgun over state lines.

On one hand I've been told it's OK, regardless of the states I pass through, as long as the gun is unloaded, locked up, away from access of driver and passengers, and as long as the ammo is not storred with the gun.

On the other hand, I've been told different states have different laws, and some require a permit, even if the gun is locked away.

I've looked at Packing.org and have gotten smatterings of info.

Is there a simple answer or is this really one of those "it depends" situations?

Thanks

This is part of the 1986 FOPA, a federal law. However, if your car gets searched (for whatever reason), most likely it'll be a state or local LEO doing the searching, and some states have openly said that they'll ignore the FOPA.

Do you know wich states. I had not heard that on recently.

I remember Mass. tried to ignore the federal law and lost in the courts.

You might have a look at Packing.org (http://www.packing.org/)

They've got a good rundown on the various laws, federal & state.

Personally, I reckon what they don't know won't hurt 'em, but the danger is being in an accident, or stopped by LEO for some other reason & a weapon is found, etc.

I'd make sure any guns were out of sight, anyway.
