I like the idea, but maybe you could make the wording a bit more catchy? Just a thought.

I have a whole bunch of variants written. Trying to convey not only thje obvious but the very idea that this may become a real situation (Katrina, LA92, etc.)

Not enough context.

Top:

Foxhole or Grave

Middle:

Rifle and Shovel Crossed over hole

Bottom:

Your Choice

I like how quick and to the point this is.

"foxhole or grave...

...either way, you dig your own"

i like the last few images, but the rhyming has got to go

Doesn't rhyming help to remember the words?

The concept is strong and so is the image.

---------------------------

Without a gun you won't have a choice between digging a foxhole or a grave.

...............................

If you're going to be forced to pick up a shovel and dig, it should be a foxhole instead of a grave.

..............................

People that won't dig foxholes early enough may be forced to dig their own graves.

It's your choice.
..............................

Foxhole - Sooner Grave - Later

It's your choice.

..............................

A gun may be all the difference between a grave and a foxhole. It's your choice.

I know the rifle is supposed to be a divider between two frames, but it looks weird with the shovel grip disappearing behind the rifle. I'd put some space between the frames instead of trying to merge them together.

I've written and re-written captions for this one.

It's kickin' my ass.

The only one I have that's not complete crap:
Wars or riots: time to dig in.
Have a weapon? Are you trained?
-------------------------------
Some will fight from foxholes.
Some will dig their own graves.

Not really happy with it.

Still working.

Yeah, the picture isn't quite right for effect. A single hole across the frame would be good. The super-imposing of the shovel and Nagant makes it look cheesy. No way to get a real one to photo, Oleg? I think both the rifle and the shovel (they're both the same size IRL, right? :D ) placed horizontally across the frame on the dirt below the large single hole would be more effective.

Wording:
this is a tough one. I had one a minute ago, but I just forgot. :banghead:
I'll think about it at work. Mind-numbing tasks are great for thinking in.

I have only one grave photo to work with. I'll try a single image of it, together with various shorter captions and maybe a more modern rifle.

I liked the idea of your "Slavery / Freedom - The difference" poster, with the Martini Henry being "the difference." Something like that would be perfect here: Two pictures of the same hole, above one "fighting foxhole" and above ther other "shallow grave." Seperating the two images, the rifle with "the difference written underneath."

Or perhaps something using wording along the lines of "Will you end up in a foxhole...or a mass grave? Your tools, your choice."

I like old rifles, a Mauser is fine. At the end of the day, evil black rifles don't come across well. Better to win an anti over on the issue of guns full stop, then convince them that colour and shape dosn't change anything.

That's exactly what I was trying to convey. Will try to re-edit this weekend.

Change "own" to "your".

"In the end, we all may be digging holes. Whether it's a foxhole, or a grave, depends on who's holding the rifle."

Neat concept, Oleg. Maybe link to the mass graves of Nazi Germany, Stalin, Pol Pot, Iraq, etc. Or, change the rifle to something far more modern. Great idea, sir!

Oleg,
I really like your 2nd Ammendment views polls and quiz. I sent a link to one of our anti friends. Well-done on how you phrased the questions - of course I'm quite pro-2A so you didn't have to convince me, but even the most articulate anti is going to look pretty foolish trying to argue against your quiz questions.

Doesn't rhyming help to remember the words?

yep. i guess what's giving me pause here is that it's causing you to say things that are a little awkward like "dig own grave" to make it fit.

the point is that rhyming only works if it doesn't take my attention away from the message.

Maybe your metaphor is wrong. A foxhole assumes a defensive position. Defensive wars are lost, Ask the Belgians, French, AND Germans.

In 1969 I was in I Corp on the DMZ next to the Laotian border. We were digging in on a hill, and, as a grunt will do, I found a place that had a 5-6 inch dip to the ground thinking this would save me a few E-tool loads of dirt. I got down about 4 feet and hit something hard. It turned out to be a French helmet. Never did find any bones but I always wondered how that healmet got buried that deep. Foxhole? Grave?

The key thing you're trying to accomplish is not that folks "remember the words" but that they grasp the meaning of the image.

When rhyming becomes obtrusive, it either obscures the meaning or, due to cheesiness, lowers its credibility.

Simpler evocative phrasing, without rhyme, will achieve your intent better than bad rhyme. Look at most modern branding, not a lot of rhyming going on. That's because it works.

Yeah, Oleg - but I don't plan on digging my own grave.:p

Likely both -- you were in the 5th Infantry Division on Operation Remagen?

^Unarmed people can be forced to dig their own graves.

Armed, at best you'll fight in a foxhole and live. At worst, you'll die and the bastards who got you will have to dig the sodding thing for you. You get the last laugh either way :D

The differance between a foxhole and a grave is who holds the rifle.

Would either use two different holes with either body or person in it, or a single hole with just the shovel and rifle. Love the idea. Might be better if you could use a model in both shots, one dug in for the fight, the other lying in the bottom.
