When a friend of mine got engaged, I laid one away as a wedding gift. Before the wedding, his wife got him a .357 derringer with 2 barrels. So I let the layaway go, and got him a Remington 870 police model instead.
We still wonder every once in a while, what it would have felt like to shot it. Practical? Not very. But under the poker table, it beats a royal flush every time.

Oh I dont know. Most people arent very scarred of Derringers. But a 45-70 migth change their perspective.

If I were an orthopedic surgeon, I would love them - lots of money to be made.

As a lover of small guns in big calibers you've just made my day, and hurt my bank account. I had no idea such a thing existed, good thing there's a big gun show coming up next month!
Here's a couple of my current favorites, a COP .357 derringer that I've had for a long time, and a recently acquired AMT DAO Backup in .45 ACP. Both seem underpowered compared to a .45-70!

I had no idea such a thing existed, good thing there's a big gun show coming up next month!I'm quite sure you won't find one there. You'll probably have to order one; I believe American Derringer was one of the very few to make them. I don't even know if they still exist. But, I've never seen one at a gun show. Most derringers I see are .38spl or some other pleasant caliber.
With the .45-70, shoot a 300 gr Remington factory round out of one and you may never shoot again.

I shot a .38 Special Derringer and the darn thing tried to twist right out of my hand. I'm lucky I had a good grip on it or, well, you know...
I think a Derringer in .25 Auto or .32 Auto would be easy to shoot but I can't even guess what it would be like to shoot a Derringer in .357 Mag let alnoe a 45-70. That's a tough round out of a full size handgun with a 8"/12" Barrel!!
I would love to see a video of someone firing a 45-70 Derringer :what:

Croike, can you imagine the fireball from that thing? Maybe, what, 5% of the powder would actually burn inside the barrel? LOL, too funny.

LOL, I didn't even think about the flame thrower effect!! LOL
I wonder how long the barrel is since the round is almost 3" long.

Kind of hard to get the second shot off in a decent amount of time.

Call it a decade and a half ago someone let me take a .45-70 deringer out of the shotp and onto his outdoor range. As my buddy was with me he gave us two rounds.
The gun looked like a Remington type double derringer, but the bottom barrel was actually closed and there was no firing pin for it, it was used as a holder for a second round.
We filled a soda can with the powdery sand from the back stop on the theory that a near miss would otherwise send the empty can over the backstop.
I placed both rounds in the pistol actually to have the advantage of the extra weight even if the lower barrel did not work.
According to my friend the muzzle flash was the size of a basket ball and he swore it engulfed my hand. Remarkably I hit the sand filled can....as we found the lower half of it sitting right were we set it. Most of the top half was laying empty of sand a few yards away. No Hoo-Hoo. My guess is that the sand had to leave faster than it could by going through the drinking opening and since someone had convieniently made two .45 calibe holes that sand had rushed out those tearing the can in half.
I was impressed.
It kicked a bit and the pistol rolled up in my hand and stayed up until I repositioned it.
I offered the gun to my friend for his shot and he refused to take it. So I shot it again after ejecting the spent case and reloading with the stored round.
The recoil was more noticable with the second shot and I missed low left so my guess is the old grey glop inside the skull sent a mesage to grip tighter than before because the back part was scared even if the front part was not and so I palmed the grip and not only mised but got the gun a bit out of align with my shooting arm.
I decided not to ask to shoot anymore from that gun and have not since.

A 45-70 derringer makes about as much sense as cannon in 22lr.

Well, it ain't like I need one why I never did it. I've got a .30-30 that kills deer and hogs quite dead. It's a TC hunter barrel, compensated, and is sweet to shoot. Hell on the ears, though.
You're likely right, too, cause I have a .45 Colt barrel I load hot and it's about all I can stand in handgun recoil. That Contender's grip shape don't help matters. Same load in my blackhawk isn't bad at all.
Now then, knowing what I know about that .45 Colt, I'm trying to IMAGINE a derringer in .45-70, but it's sort of incomprehensable. I don't think I'd wanna be the first guy to shoot it.

I've fired a Contender in .45-70. The trigger guard cut my finger on the first shot. It was controllable though and with some modifications, would make for a nice hunting gun. I'm used to firing an XP-100 mid grip pistol in .308 so I wasn't too worried about recoil, but the .45-70 kicked HARD! I can't even imagine one in a derringer.

Ive shot a few thousand rounds out of my SSK Industries made 45/70 14" Contender since my dad gave it to me when I was 12. I shot it the first time that day. I was never told I should be scared to shoot it so I wasnt. But I was never quite brave enough to shoot the derringer but I have been wondering what it would be like.

I'll touch one off as soon as i can get to the range, if someone hands me the derringer and ammo. I'm near Fort Hood, TX.
I'm serious.
I'll even let people watch/take pictures/ film the experience.
Or am i missing the point, and its just fun to speculate???
