Visions of owning a Beretta 92fs have been playing in my brain since last friday when I saw one on consignment at one of the local fun shops. I only had time to take a quick look at it, because it was almost closing time. The Beretta 92 or M9 has been on my "To Buy List" for a while.
At $575 it was okay price for my area, plus it had Crimson Trace grips. So all week I've been trying to figure out a way to fit it into my gun buget. Because I had a Marlin 336 and a Norinco 97 on layaway there and a S&W 4006 on layaway at another shop. Well I came up with a bit of extra cash so it'd fit the buget, so I head up there today and ask the gal to see it, good thing, in the better light of day (when I was there last, at night, the shop is really dark ) I noticed it had pretty good holster wear, so I asked if the owner was a LEO, the gal said yes, but only a reserve. The more I looked the stranger the wear patterns looked. Worse yet the thing was caked in dust in every nook and cranny. I did a quick strip down and the barrel was dirty. The more I saw the less I liked. :uhoh:
I hand it back and start to look for a Ruger Blackhawk in .357mag they had NIB, gone. :(
Then I notice a S&W model 59, chromed and the grip feels wrong. :scrutiny:
Then next to the 59, under the phone on the counter, I see a nice Bersa Thunder .380 http://www.bersafirearmsusa.com/images/pistols/thun380lt_mat_lg.jpg
$195, clean almost NIB, but no box, just a uncle mike's holster. :)
So I pay off the Marlin and put $25 on the Bersa. Well the Bersa's been on the "To Buy List" too and now I don't have to eat Ramen unless I want to.

At a certain point you just have to pass, but all that dirt and crud can make for an effective bargaining tool. I bought a Taurus 99 a year or so ago that has lots of holster wear, and was quite dirty. I paid a whopping $165.00 for it, including a cheapy kydex holster. After I did a thorough cleaning, it has ended up being a very pleasant and surprisingly accurate gun. I have deemed it reliable enough to serve full-time duty as my truck gun, and actually liked the platform enough that I bought a stainless version of the same gun just a few months later. Now, granted, anything with "Beretta" on the side is going to be more expensive than anything with "Taurus" on the side, but the point is that all that crud can make for quite a bargain.
With all that being said, the Bersa was a good choice!

I asked if there was bargining room and the gal said no, the guy wanted about $700-800 for it but they told him $575 was top dollar and about the most he'd get and the original grips aren't part of the deal, he threw them in the trash. :banghead:

Used 92fs' should not be difficult to find. The Italian inox one I bought was prestine when I bought it & it has been a great performer. If you don't get the right price, keep looking.

A used Beretta 92FS shouldn't be that hard to find. I've typically seen them come into shops in groups which leads me to believe that they are part of a police trade in or some sort of group sale. About a year and a half ago I picked up a used 92FS with two high cap mags for $400 without the box or booklet. It shoots nice and is still in good condition.
Keep looking and you will probably find one in nice condition for a lower price.
Good luck.

10-Ring, Eskimo Jim, I'm afraid you've never been to my neck of the woods, handguns around here are almost as scarce as hen's teeth.

brentwal - if you have a local gun shop, you should be able to buy a Beretta online & have it delivered to your FFL ;) If they're that rare in your neck of the woods, gunsamerica.com might be the way to go ;)

Beretta is a damn fine weapon but you can do a lot better on price. If you want to find a great one at a great price, just buy that overpriced junker and the next day your dream gun will appear. :D It's happened to me more often than I like to think about.

brentwal,
CDNN has Beretta 92FS's right now for $399.00. Would that local gun shop of yours accept a gun shipment for you? If so, then this would certainly be a better deal for you.
These are 'Y'-marked guns, meaning, there is a small blemish somewhere - most likely under the grips where it's not visible. Because of this blemish, I believe the guns are sold as 'used', but in reality, they are new for all practical purposes (never been owned before, never shot, etc.). $399 for a NIB Beretta, or $575 for the one your local shop is selling...
Presumably, your local shop would receive the shipment for you, for a small fee.
Might be worth checking out, if you are still jonesing for a 92.

To get around shops like the ones around me that charge $50 to receive guns because you aren't buying from them:fire: , try going through an unbiased pawn shop with an FFL, I read recently they will probably be much cheaper, and won't care so much.

this reminds me of the reason why I have TWO bank accounts...one gets the majority of my paycheck...the other gets a "fun-fund" deposit...but hey....you can still dress up ramen quite a bit...trust me I know. :)
I am to the point where I don't know what the next "fun-fund" item will be. :) too many choices....
As for the 92FS stainless...I got mine from a friend...3 mags, case, extra guide rod, hogue grips AND factorys plus about 500 rounds of ammo for 450.
I used to have it...now it kinda belongs to my girlfriend. :uhoh:
Follow the previous advice...find out if they will do a transfer for you bro...it would be much cheaper AND you could get other things in there as well for a more reasonable price, I am sure.

CDNN (http://www.cdnninvestments.com/index.html) usually has a ready supply of police trade-in Beretta 92s for between $300 and 400. Download the catalog, take a look, and have your dealer give 'em a call!

CDNN's newest catalog still has NIB 92fs listed for $420.00. There's no tax, unless you live in Texas. Add: $10.00 freight, transfer fee from your local FFL, and total price should be between $450 & $480. Sounds like a bargain to me.

Actually, CDNN has the 92FS for $399.00 right now, per an email I got from them.
Their 90Two is $499.00, I believe.
Yeah - when you live far from options, an online purchase is the way to go.

Think Taurus 92. I have had both makes. Still have the taurus 15 years later.
Same functionality, great reliability, safety in the proper position. NIB for around $350 max.

Brentwal, KY Imports has lots of used Beretta 92s, POR (Price on Request). They also have Beretta 96s in used, good to very good condition with night sights for $310, so the 92s should be similar in price. http://www.kyimports.com/beretta.htm

Amen! I picked up myself a used P226 Navy from our local gunshop with 2 extra mags (total of 3) for $500 because it was so filled with grime. I spent a couple hours alone time with it, now you'd never know it was even used!
