A fortnight ago got careless pulling out an earplug. One of the common ones, a plastic cone with three annular rings, they go a pair on a string. Bled a little, got deaf for a week. Now seem to have recovered completely. Any similar experience?

Best regards, Alexey

Maybe you punctured the eardrum? It heals over time (deaf for a week), but its not something you want to happen more than a couple times. Each time it heals the resulting scar tissue is less flexible than normal tissue and can result in a decline in hearing. The less sensitive the eardrum the less sensitive your hearing. Plus the scar tissue is more prone to further injury as well.

Dont put the plugs in so far! Or use your thumbs like this guy:neener:

Just short of puncture, as the tubes worked more or less the usual way. Badly sprained, I guess, if sprain is the right word :). And yes, I don't relish it happening again.

Best regards, Alexey

Get the soft foam earplugs. They do a better job of sound protection, and not as likely to cause damage.

If it could have been caused by the suction of pulling tight earplugs out too quickly. I've never done it that badly, but I have gotten my own attention a time or two

I've done that too. If they are the kind with the string, don't grab the string and just yank the sucker out!

My partner is an Audiologist- she said that it was most likely the suction, she has to be careful about that making earmolds.
BTW she said that the plugs you describe with the rings are not very good-use the soft ones and insert them properly.
I know mine are in when I hear the crackling noise as they expand to fit the earhole.

Cheers
