new bullet accurate and strong at 2500 meters. on future weapons. shot out of .416. the guy with the M107 .50 cal had to take 3 shots to be 4 feet under bullseye. mac shot once and he was 2 feet under it. also, mac stated "Being a former sniper" so now we all know, he was a seal sniper

I wonder if as a sniper he ever used an M40 chambered in 7.62x39 aka .308 :neener:
Wasn't that .416 developed as a response to Cali banning the .50BMG? I wonder if they'll ban that now.

Let's have some constructive discussion, or we can close this thread.

.416 looks like a fun round.

I wonder who is going to make a bullet with the BC and SD of the .408 CheyTac.

either way once I get the fundng back I'm going to buy a Barrett or Intervention to play around with

I think Zak will agree that the .416 is an untried weapons platform, add to this the fact that Barrett controls everything. I can't see this system going anywhere unless other manufactures make rifles in this caliber and promote it as much if not more then Barrett.

The M82 hit the target in the episode and you're comparing apples to oranges as the M82 will never be as accurate as a bolt gun. Then add to the whole scheme of things that this is a "show" on TV.

I've hit a target at 1 mile with my .50 and I've seen guys hit the target we had set up at 2000 yards with their .50's and one friend with his .408 CheyTac. Our "SEAL" makes it sound like a super cartridge that's the end all to all others.

I all for new ultra-LR cartridges and weapons systems, and I don't really have an opinion on the 416.

I'd just like the discussion here to be about the cartridge and rifle, not about the show's host which is off-topic.

Carry on.

IIRC, in a magazine I got from Barrett on request they claim that the .416 stays supersonice past 1000 meters or yards, can't remember which. If that's the case, wouldn't it have a pretty flat trajectory making it more accurate at longer distances than the .50BMG?

Flat trajectory is not required for accuracy, per se. As the drop rate increases, the need for precise ranging to make first-round hits is increased.

In any case, both 416 and 50BMG stay well supersonic WAY past 1000 meters. 2000 meters should be no problem for both.

Ah, well the way it sounded in the article, this .416 was the only cartridge that stayed supersonice past 1000 meters.

If more places have a .50BMG ban this cartridge will likely become a popular caliber, otherwise it will likely have a limited market. CA banned the BMG, so the type of shooter that spends that much on a rifle and is into long range shooting of high powered rounds just adapted as could be expected.

The .510 DTC EUROP (also called the .50DTC and using the same bullet as the .50 BMG) is described as being created for the same purpose as the .416 in Europe when they banned the BMG in places there. If those were banned someone would just create an equaly powerful, or slightly more or less powerful round of different dimensions to compensate and call it something new.

The people into the hobby of shooting BMG type rifles spend a lot of cash, and something like designing new brass and dimensions is just a minor inconvenience to overcome by throwing some cash at whatever legal problem arises for a new solution.

However it is also a limited niche market, so something new only will have enough support to warrant its creation and production if the existing market in a location has to adapt due to bans and such. The entire state of CA with a population of around 35 million 'legal' residents(many million more of illegals) having a BMG ban produced just such a market. Any future state bans will further that market.

Did they mention, or does anyone know, how the recoil compares to that of the .50 BMG? I would think it would be slightly more, but I'd like to know for sure.

I would assume it's less as the case is actually a wildcatted .50 BMG case. I can't imagine how overbore it is, wonder what the barrel life expectancy is?

The case was wildcatted so that they could use a standard Barrett M99 as a platform for it. http://www.barrettrifles.com/rifle_99.aspx
