I'm not looking for your favorite movie but i am looking for a compilation(list) of good war movies. I am tired of watching the same ones over again and am looking for some different flicks.

List so far:
Band of brothers
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
The Deer Hunter
Jarhead

From watching so many good war movies, all other somewhat crappy ones are ruined for me.

War-related movies count too.

If you enjoyed reading about "Compilation of good war movies" here in TheHighRoad.org archive, you'll LOVE our community. Come join TheHighRoad.org today for the full version!

I would add:

Zulu
Zulu Dawn. (This came out after Zulu, but portrays the events leading up to Islandlawana and Roark's Drift).
The Longest Day
A Bridge to Far
Breaker Morant
Sands of Iwo Jima
Battleground
Flags of Our Fathers, and its counterpoint, Letters From Iwo Jima.
Wind Talkers
Midway
Gettysburg
Gods and Generals
The Desert Rats

I would delete:

Jarhead sucked in both print and movie versions. :barf:
Platoon and the deer hunter were both hollywierd propaganda. :barf:

John Wayne and the draft.

The fact remains that the man who came to symbolize American patriotism and pride had a chance to do more than just act the part, and he let it pass. Source The Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a5_004.html)

All time favorite: We Were Soldiers Once and Young
Other good ones: Band of Brothers, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, Go Tell the Spartans, Blackhawk Down, Dogs of War, Longest Day, Bridge Too Far, The Boat, The Enemy Below, Zulu, Glory, Sgt. York. Too many to remember.

I knew a few of the reenactors who were in that. I heard that the Black extras were offered their unifirms, rifles and kit as part of their compensation. Many of them took the offer and became active reenactors.

Paths of Glory- early Kubrick, one of the few WWI movies around. Ethics and leadership.

Kelly's Heroes- yeah, yeah a comedy, but check out the details of weapons, vehicles, ambush setup, minefields, and the interactions of a platoon of infantry. Best cast movie ever.

The Rough Riders- John Milius directing.

More to come, I'm going to look through the collection.

Yes, a very well done movie about a phenomenal battle. Little Ricky Schroeder has matured into a pretty good actor.

More filums:

The Lost Command - based on Larteguy's "The Centurions" Very hard to find, but opening Dien Ben Phu sequence worth the rest of the movie.

The Steel Helmet - directed by Sam Fuller Very few Korean conflict movies, this one from the early days. Refurbished several years ago for AMC's annual movie celebration, why is it not out on DVD or tape yet?

Hell is for Heroes - another well cast movie, Don Siegal directed. Bob Newhart in his first movie role, Steve McQueen, Fess Parker.

Attack - Gritty film that the Army refused to help with. Once seen, no wonder. Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, Eddie Albert

I was just scanning netflix for good ideas for war movies and came across this. I was so shocked I thought I'd share..
The Seige at Ruby Ridge
In this dramatization of actual events, white supremacist Randy Weaver (Randy Quaid) and his wife, Vicki (Laura Dern), think they're above the law, amassing guns without permits. When the feds issue an arrest warrant, the couple, with their children, retreats to a cabin in the woods. Tailed by the authorities, the Weaver family holes up with their weapons, triggering an 11-day standoff watched closely by Americans across the country.

"Das Boot", director's cut, in German with English subtitles.

The English-dubbed version is nowhere near as good.

Last of the Mohicans?
A bit over-romanticized but solid movie. Movie a guy and girl can watch together and both be satisfied.
Loved the part where Hawkeye clobbers that one Indian with his tomahawk.:D

And one movie that is forgotten but has so many levels to it:
A Soldier's Story
Black soldiers, WWII, enmity, entropy, bigotry, and pride. Fine acting. No battle scenes.
But you come away from it with a wider view.

I have been meaning to watch Master and Commander. Must get around to doing that.

SSN Vet
February 6, 2007, 08:27 PM
Das Boot (see the origonal German with subtitles, not The Boat with the cheasy accent English dubs)

Run Silent Run Deep

The Guns of Navarone

and a must see.....Galipoli.....with a very young Mel Gibson (who's still one of my favorite actors, despite his recent drunken foo-pahs)

and yes Master and Commander is VERY good.....

These three are originally in German. Watch them in German with English subtitles (don't get dubbed English versions):
Das Boot

Here'a few to add to the list if they're not already there:

The Civil War: A film by Ken Burns
Patton
Blackhawk Down
Saving Private Ryan
Schlinder's List
Kelly's Heroes
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Killing Fields
Paths of Glory
The African Queen

Not all of them are war movies in the traditional sense but, instead, have war as a backdrop. But damn they're good.

here's Two I thought would be at the top of the list :

Where Eagles Dare. - Clint Eastwood plays a Ranger w/ a suitcase full of dynamite and Richard Burton the English Military intel man who invade a German held castle. Very twisty spy story amid all the ****e blowing up.

The Cross of Iron - James Coburn as a very professional non political german NCO vs. the Russians , and his own officers.

I'll try not to include movies already suggested.

I was very suprised to NOT see

The Great Escape (cmon steve freaking mcqueen with a motorcycle?)
Seven Samurai (not quite a war but maybe close enough?) wait for the rain...
Lawrence of Arabia
Spartacus
Gladiator :what: (warlike?) "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

and last but not least, right next to Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers as my Favorite WW2 Movie and it's a lot older!

Night of the Fox:
a made for TV movie about a sort of spy in Jersey during WWII. Long but very good.

Glory
Zulu (scrupulously accurate)
Master and Commander
The Crossing (Made for tv; one clunky line by Washington)

When you guys are referring to "The Lost Patrol" do you guys mean "The Lost Battalion"? That is the only one I think that A&E made; good movie. Also there is two versions of Sahara, the one with Belushi was the first one I watched but I must say I liked the 1943 Humphrey Bogart version more.

The Battle of Algiers - Good movie for a oldie.

The Best Years of our Lives - A view of WWII vets after the war. No action but good acting.

Empire of The Sun - a bit hard to sit through at times but the scene with "P-51 CADILLAC OF THE SKY!! HORSE POWER!!" and the look on Christian Bales face at the end when reunite were worth it.

Heartbreak Ridge - might not belong here for some but I loved seeing Clint as a marine.

A Midnight Clear - when the patrol comes across a German and allied soldier frozen in a standing fighting position was a good scene.

Taegukgi (The Brotherhood of War) was a recent Korean movie on the Korean war that I thought was pretty good. Fake at times and the ending was ehhh on realism but there is a lot less movies about the Korean war to pick from.

Also anybody seen the 2005 Yamato? Having a hard time finding this one in stores.

First off, if you haven't seen "The Great Raid", you should. It is very well done, and very interesting.

Secondly, I also vote for Sands of Iwo Jima.

Thirdly, I knew that jackass that was portrayed in Jarhead. I really, really can't express my true feelings about that book or that movie without using a lot of words that start with F, but suffice it to say that I am not a fan. That movie is packed with lies, from beginning to end. Rockstar.esq went to see it with me in the theatre, and he will tell you that I was purple with rage by the time we left. "Swoff" is nothing more than a low-life, barracks lawyer who was and is bitter because things got hard. If he put half the energy into being a Marine that he did into whining, he would have been a pretty good Marine. I really, really, really don't like that guy.

The two best damn movies ever made were Zulu and The Great Escape, no particular order. Saw them both in the theaters with Dad when I was a little kid, and 100 times since. Hell I can almost recite both of them.

There are two rather obscure Peter O' Toole movies which are superb (he's my favorite actor). Murphy's War, and Rogue Male. Must see.

There are also:
Lawrence of Arabia
Patton
Platoon
Hunt for Red October
Gettysburg
The Sand Pebbles
Bravehart
Last of the Mohicans (just 'cause Madeline Stowe is in it)
The Longest Day (I got your John Wayne)
Saving Private Ryan (most intense)
Band of Brothers
The Blue Max (WWI German fighter pilots)
Master an Commander
Battle of the Bulge
Enemy at the Gates
Breaker Morant (Boer War)
The Lighthorseman (WWI)
The Enemy Below
Cross of Iron
Das Boot
Where Eagles Dare
The Rough Riders
Glory
Sharp's Rifles (British mini series- excellant)
Horatio Hornblower (A&E mini series-excellant)
Firefox
Masada (mini series)
The Eagle Has Landed
Independance Day (maybe a guilty pleasure)

If your ever looking for a good read, that would have made a great movie- Red Storm Rising, by Tom Clancy. Best story he ever wrote.

There. That ought to keep you busy for a while. :D

Scanning for titles not yet mentioned . . .

Operation Petticoat (1959)

I see Mike has already listed O'Toole's Murphy's War

I didn't see anyone listing Goodbye Mr. Chips (O'Toole, 1969) -- a little less war, a little more humanity.

And no movie titles containing the word "Alamo?"

Breaker Morant....

"We shot them under Rule 303" arguably one of the best lines of any war-movie...

I don't THINK I saw The Enemy Below listed previously...nor In Harms Way...didn't see The 300 Spartans either...might be wrong, however.

A few I wish to echo, however....

Ambush
Saving Pvt Ryan
Where Eagles Dare
The Eagle has Landed
Flying Leathernecks
Cast a Giant Shadow
Tae Guk Gi
Das Boot (DC German w/english subs...all 219 min) should also read Iron Coffins...written by Buchheim and provided some inspiration for the book Das Boot.

I will add one that I read about in a Clancey novel...most will know which I am talking about...Alexander Nevskiy. I must admit that some of the directing was kinda out of date (but then look at the time when the movie was made and who was responsible...) but overall the movie was quite good. The subtitles were a bit annoying, but really a good movie.

Also not listed and possibly not considered a war movie...Munich.
Still worth watching...and I personally considered it a war movie...

Beast of War was great--you rarely see things from either of those perspectives, the Mujahideen or the Soviets (esp. tankers).

Also, how could I forget The Dogs of War?

Christopher Walken as a mercenary in the late 70's, helping rebels in an African country. I don't think it was too bad--very gritty, at least the politics part in London was.

BAT-21. Vietnam era. Based on a true story, novel by William Anderson, plus screenplay co-credit. The officer depicted in BAT-21, was a personal friend of Anderson's.

12 OCLOCK HIGH had one of the very best openings I've ever seen in a movie, bar none.

Coincidentally, when 20th Century Fox made the movie, 12 OCLOK HIGH into a television series, the story editor was William Anderson, who later wrote BAT-21.

(Before becoming a screenwriter and novelist, Anderson was a career officer in the USA Air Corps in WW II, and later USAF in Korea. He flew combat missions as pilots on B17s and B29s.)

Ditto "Taegukgi." It's quite spectacular considering the budget, though it's a little melodramatic for modern American tastes.

Also add:

Talvisota "The Winter War," one of the seminal war films of all time. It's no-nonsense laconic view of the war influenced later films.

Rukajärven tie ("Ambush"). A more recent Finnish war film about a bicycle squad in the Continuation War. It's not as gritty as Talvisota, but it's still fun to watch those guys dart around on the proto-mountain bikes with Mosins slung over their shoulders.

"Come and See" should be added to the list, but you won't want to watch it more than once.

In addition to "The Rough Riders," I rather liked the TNT film "The Hunley." It's quite unusual in showing some of the Romantic (capital "R") spirit that motivated the Confederate movement.

"Breaker Morant" is a great war film even though it's about a trial. I would rank it far higher than "Paths of Glory," which hasn't aged well at all.

Don't forget the WWI films including "Gallipoli" and even better the "sequel" to it, "The Lighthorsemen," which doesn't get half as much press but which is a better war movie. The charge on the Turkish lines is fantastic, and drawn directly from the pages of history. I rather liked the recent effort "The Lost Battalion," which is unusual for modern films in looking at American troops during the first world war.

And of course ditto on ZULU! and Lawrence of Arabia. These are MUST own films for anyone. O'Toole is perfect as Lawrence. I love the charges, as well as the scene where he marches out of the desert, barges into the officer's club in Cairo with his "black" assistant in tow, orders a drink and announces that he has single handedly led the Arabs and taken a key Turkish port! Just as in real life, the Brits weren't quite sure whether to court martial him or promote him.

Most of my favorites are already here. +1 on 'Twelve O'Clock High', 'Zulu', 'Breaker Morant. I could watch 'Kelly's Heros' every day.

Haven't seen 'The Wind and the Lion' on the list. One of John Milius' best.
There's a great German movie called 'Die Brucke', ('The Bridge').
'What did you do in teh War, Daddy' is a riot.

I'll echo some that I forgot about.

Bat 21 (excellant. Gene Hackman, Danny Glover)
Gallipoli (Mel Gibson, before he lost his mind)
The Lost Batallion
The Wind & The Lion (Sean Connery. Moorish Risuli with a Scottish accent)
Windtalkers
Von Ryan's Express
Father Goose

A couple of oldies that were really good-
Mr. Roberts (classic)
Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison
The Charge of the Light Brigade (the one made in the '60s. Trevor Howard)

No one has mentioned Memphis Belle, yet. That was a good one, too.
