I am thinking about the 250 Savage. Would like to hear from people that use or have used it. What bullets and loads they used. What rifle? Anyone have a Savage Model 20?

I've used it for whitetail and smaller critters and love it, but I suspect it's because of the nice Ruger ultralight that chambers it. I handload and early on settled on the 100 grain Nosler BT over a max charge over 4895. It might be a bit hotter than the factory stuff but at about 2800 or 2900 the fairly soft bullet behaves well. I've only recovered one bullet and that was from a quartering shot that was just under the skin on the other side. All the rest have exited. I consider it to be sized just right for our mid sized deer.

No experience with the Savage rifle.

My only caution is if you're not a reloader. Factory rounds are seldom seen now.

I have killed more deer "dead on the spot" with the .250 than any other caliber I've used. All bullets but one exited the other side of the animal, leaving a large hole in the hide.

Two deer went 100 yards after being shot. Both were hit a bit too far back, so it was my fault.

I used 100 grain Remington Core-Lokt factory loads, and then my reloads with the same bullet on all the deer. Midway and Midsouth Shooter's Supply sometimes have .250 brass available

My rifle is also a Ruger M77 lightweight. It is very accurate for three shots, then the light barrel heats and the group shifts.

I went out looking for a Savage M20 in .250 but the ones I found were all in .300 Savage. Savage evidently made some 110s in .250, but I've never seen one. I saw one in .257 Roberts yesterday and found it interesting. If it had been in .250 I'd have laid the plastic on the counter pronto.

The .250 is a great cartridge.

What prices did you see on the Model 20's in 300?

It's been five years or so since I saw a Model 20, so I can't remember what the asking price was at the time.

I had the bright idea of setting up a bolt action target rifle in .250 once. Looking around I found that my "original" idea had already been done. Winchester made model 54s and Model 70s in target dress in .250 a long time ago.

I always thought an M1A in .250 would be interesting. Recoil would be down from the usual .308 and the accuracy would be there too.
