(AWB) Purchase now, or after?

By working myself to the bone all summer, I figure I can afford the 2 AR's I like now, and 20 mags.

My question is, should I bet on the AWB getting renewed, and get the 2 AR's and mags now, only to have them go down in value should the ban fade away?

Or should I count on it not going through and get them later for cheaper, with the chance that I won't be able to get them ever.

You might consider hedging your bets. Pick up one rifle and whatever amount of magazines that you think would be prudent to have in the event that the ban passes. If it passes, at least you've got one rifle and a supply of mags. If it doesn't, then you can pick up a non-neutered AR and lots of cheap mags.

In the meantime, call your congressthings, as well as the speaker of the house and write a letter or two.

The price of post-ban ARs won't likely come down much - they don't function any differently than pre-bans, and there's lots of competition in the marketplace now. What WILL come down in price is pre-bans, or new rifles that can actually have the same features. Mags will come down in price a bunch, as well.

I'd advise you to get 1 post-ban rifle now, mainly because I think that the AWB will die. The Bushies are excellent rifles, as are (from what I've heard) the Rock River products. You can get a good rifle with a quality heavy barrel for about $800-$900. I'd get 10 or 12 normal capacity mags, just in case we get sold down the river again. If not, then you'll be able to by loads of them for $10 a piece.

hey wait.

I thought that the sunset ended in 2004? That would be a year and a half wait! Or does it go to vote this fall?

I'm not saying to stop fighting the good fight.

I'm not saying to stop writing/calling/stalking your congressmen.

I'm just saying that I have a bad feeling about the AWB and something is telling me that it is going to get worse.

I am not giving up I am just saying that I am worried about it getting worse. Remember nobody thought the first one had a snowballs chance of actually happening.

So I say get yourself an AR while the getting is good. Pre-Ban magazines are cheap and plentiful. The gun will really be perfectly functional and if the ban does go away you will be able to put whatever nasty features you like on your current gun. Prices won't drop much if any and personally I think initially prices for pre-banesque ARs will be quite a bit higher than their post ban counterparts due to a pretty huge rise in demand.

So take what I have to say to heart since I am speaking not from fact or research but pure gut feeling. Like I said I just have a bad feeling and I don't think you will be saving any real large amounts of money by waiting.

This would be different if you were considering say a SIG PRO and a SIG 226 since you cannot get full capacity magazine for the PRO unless the ban goes away. In a case such as that I would probably wait. For ARs/AKs buy em now while you can.

The AWB expires in September 2004.

The ban had a 10 year sunset, and was passed in 1994. It expires in September 2004, not quite a year and a half from now.

I'd vote for buying one rifle now and waiting. Things look good right now, but 15 months is an eternity in politics. A couple of school shootings or another John Lee Malvo and the ban is renewed.

If it isn't renewed, pre-ban prices will come down. I won't lose money on the AR that I have, since I paid a pre-ban price for it.
