June 2, 2003

SACRAMENTO -- Newly designed handguns would have to be equipped with devices intended to prevent accidental shootings under legislation approved Monday by the state Senate.

The measure by Sen. Jack Scott, D-Altadena, would require that the firearms have either a chamber load indicator or a magazine disconnect mechanism, starting with models produced in 2005. New handgun models made after Jan. 1, 2007, would have to have both items.

A load indicator reveals if a bullet is in the firing chamber. A magazine disconnect mechanism prevents the gun from being fired when the bullet magazine is removed, even if there is a round in the chamber.

Scott said a study by Johns Hopkins University indicated that requiring the devices would reduce the number of accidental shootings by 24 percent.

"We want to do what we can do to limit deaths and injuries from firearms," he said.

But Sen. Rico Oller, R-San Andreas, said the devices would give gun owners a false sense of security. "Firearms are inherently dangerous," he said. "To say this is going to make those guns less dangerous is a very backward argument."

Some firearms, he added, can't be adapted to accommodate the devices.

"This bill is designed to make it harder to have guns qualify (for sale) in California," he said. "It's going to cost consumers a tremendous amount of money..., (and) it's not going to have any impact on gun safety."

A 22-16 vote sent the bill to the Assembly.

Senator Scott's idea is totally wrong. He is saying that people that are negligent will be stopped simply because of a chamber load indicator or magazine disconnect, not because they should learn to be responsible.

This law will in fact prevent most pistols from being sold in California. This is why all the grabbers are getting in line to sign off on this bill. Its a de facto ban.

This is pretty mild when you consider what we have in Maryland. We cannot purchase a handgun made after 1/1/03 unless it has a built in lock device that can prevent firing. Now that is how you can cut back on availability. If only they could find other ways to save us from ourselves. Al

"We want to do what we can do to limit deaths and injuries from firearms," he said.Let's re-write that maybe .....

''We want to use the excuse of firearms injuries and deaths to greatly limit firearm availablity (tho we know the crooks will always have them), because we want to really remove firearms from the law abiding citizen in the end. We know that negligence, suicide and homicides are the main reasons for the injuries and deaths (yeah .... criminals and whackos for the most part) but hey ..... we don't apply logic .... this all about denial of rights.''

So could you purchase a non-safety device pistol out of state via FFL? If not, this is a completely ridiculous law.

Since they can't simply repeal the Second Amendment, the leftist extremists are whittling away at it a little at a time, all in the name of "safety." What fools!

Scott's son was killed by a blast from an unloaded shotgun so he's been a crusader ever since.

Thundercleese said,
could you purchase a non-safety device pistol out of state via FFLNo.

He also said,
If not, this is a completely ridiculous law.Yes. <sigh>

There's a long list, & it's getting longer, of guns that Kali residents are not supposed to have.

I'm looking forward to my return to the US of A, and at least I can have a gun at home in Carlsbad, but the situation in the PRK (People's Republik of Kalifornia) has an awful lot to be desired.

Still, better than Australia (mebbe only just...)

for a little while at least.
unlike NYC where I am from,
you could have moved here
a few years ago and have a pistol
you bought in Florida but you never
registered(think NY city Navy Vet Ron
Dixon) and shoot a thug home invader
without facing jail time...we do have MASSIVE
civil disobedience here,outdoor ranges with
no one checking the AR15 or AK variants.
I have met alot of Northern CA folks
who just ignore the law & carry what ever
they want when ever they want.

Here's a link from the NRA CAL-ERT:
Cal Legislative Contact Info (http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/legs.shtml)

They've got a neat gadget to email the assemblymen, senators, etc. all at once. This link also has updated info on the various California gun bills, so you can check on progress (if that's what it is....)

I don't know how much weight they put on email messages, but they can't hurt. Let them know how you feel. Also, many of the Assemblymen and Senators told me, in their 'automatic' response, that they will send a reply only to those who supply name & address, & some will only respond to those in their district (but email them anyway, what the hay.)

The link also has telephone, fax & snailmail contact info.

I'm sure THR folks don't need the reminder, but please be polite! We can oppose this idiocy without sinking to their level, but a bit o' passion won't hurt!

"Scott's son was killed by a blast from an unloaded shotgun so he's been a crusader ever since."

yeah Sen McPhereson (R Santa-Cruz)(rino repub
:fire: )
son died in frisco,Mcphereson was anti gun beforehand
and I sure it cemented his feelings.
I am sure Scott was anti before
with the same result.
IMHO being anti, they did not teach gun safety
cause they thought their kid didn't need to know
cause there where no guns in the house.
This is why we need to teach gun safety
in all schools.
BTW McPhereson's son died after being shot
when he questioned if the muggers tiny
gun was real.
If he had been exposed to firearms
he would have known that
sometimes big bangs come in small packages...:banghead:

Yea RIGHT.

Who comes up with this bull diareah?

Leme see if I git this straight.. yer too stupid to treat a gun as if it were loaded and you have a ND.... and this is gonna legislate common sense into your head? Ya didnt check it before, and youre not gonna check in now.

Can't wait to see how they are gonna put a chamber indicator on a revolver, a Ruger 10-22, a 1911....

Morons

Someone get me the :cuss: out of this state!

The Kommiefornia senate should rather pass a bill requiring senators to have a minimum of commonsense and intelligence, and if 10000 people think it's not the case, that senator gets executed by exposing him/her permanently to some "Modern Talking" CD. :)

Does anyone know if the Kalif. handgun market is big enough that manufacturers will implement these changes?

Does anyone know if the Kalif. handgun market is big enough that manufacturers will implement these changes?I think it is.

Glock ships all of it's new guns now with spent cartridges for whatever little state it is that requires them for their "ballistics" database.
