What would be the difference between a .22LR and .22 Magnum? Rounds would be used in a derringer.

22 MAG FROM A 4" revolver is similar to a 22lr from a rifle.

0.475 inches, 650fps, and about 12 cents.
*** based on product claims and sticker price on the boxes in my range bag.
I would never rely on either for self defense. Great for plinking, target shooting and small game.

Yep, pretty much. The magnum is good for anything you'd go after with .22lr out of a long gun. I take out varmints in my yard all year round with my Ruger Super Single Six 6.5" using only .22lr so it isn't too shabby. I do wish the magnums were even close to the cost of the regular .22lr rounds though...they are quite fun to shoot out of handguns.

The difference between a .22 magnum and a .22 long rifle out of a pistol like a derringer is about four bucks a box for the ammo!

The 22 Mag. was designed for a rifle. Firing a 22 Mag. from a handgun is just turning good money into loud noise.
Neither is any good for SD unless you can stick it in the BG's eye socket.

This reminds me of something Jeff Cooper wrote in his final column in Guns & Ammo:
"Times have changed. It appears we have grown up in some ways and down in others. Consider the .17 rimfire. I do not see any purpose for this last item. Just what, for example, is the mission of a magnum .17? There is a need, I suppose, for an inner-city pigeon gun, but it would seem to be illegal in most juristictions."
Granted you asked about .22 -- I could be wrong, but I don't see how a magnum .22 is going to alleviate the disadvantage of relying upon a .22 in the first place.
Although if you really need to carry a tiny gun, I heard .22 is better than .25 ACP just because of the high velocity of a .22 and that it tends to fly around inside the body. A .25 has nothing going for it; neither size nor speed.
