Mine should be coming in the mail tomorrow. Got it off a guy on gunbroker.com. Tried Gander Mountain and they said that they couldn't get it. Budsgunshop.com has some for a good price. Check 'em out.

Thanks, Tex-ordered one last week & should be in my hands this week. Knoxx makes a SpecOps stock for it, too. What ammo do you plan to use?

Go to this site and scroll about half way down. There's a section titled "20 Gauge Home defense Loads" or something close to that. They have 3 recommendations. I'm probably going to go w/ the Remington #3 buckshot reduced recoil, especially because my wife may be using this.

By the way, I got the gun yesterday. Very nice little 870. Plan on cleaning it up a bit and running some shells through it this weekend. I'll try and report back w/ news.

=========================

Verrrrry interesting. A 20 ga. 18" 870 Express with a factory mag extension and synthetic (apparently full size) furniture, for an advertised price of $274.78.

I do see managed recoil slugs available from Remington, but no reduced recoil buckshot- http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/shotshell/slugs/managed-recoil_buckhammer.asp . That at least is progress on the development of the 20 ga. 870 as a serious alternative for HD.

Now if Remington made the 18" 20 ga. 870 Express gun with a 12" LOP synthetic stock with an R3 recoil pad and no magazine extension as an option- and offered a reduced recoil buckshot load for it- then the smaller statured folks would be all set. We can hope...

Thanks again Tex-I'm glad this thread is getting a little attention. The 20g has been highly underated imho for home defense. Thanks for the link. I'm going to order the Knoxx SpecOps for the gun.

How about this for HD for the smaller shooters:

Should work fine- if there were reduced recoil buckshot around to load it with. The lighter weight of the 20 ga. pumpguns seems to get recoil jacked up pretty good from the full-house 20 ga. buck and slug loads.

Will have to get some of the Remington Managed Recoil slugs and get a report from my wife on the bearability of the old 870 Youth Express 20 ga. lurking in the safe...

Midway has the Remmy Premier reduced recoil #3 buck shot 2 3/4". You can also see it on Remington's brochure for their new "tactical" line. I guess they came out w/ it specifically for the 20 ga. HD 870.

I've always been a 12 ga. guy. Always wondered what the point was in having anything else when you can manage/ adapt 12 ga. loads for pretty much any particular situation you are in. However... while I still think that is probably true, I definitely see the appeal of a 20 ga. especially if my wife is going to be potentially handling this gun w/ a perp in the house. (Got this gun w/ that in mind. If I'm traveling or gone for some other reason, etc.)

I'll tell you if my conversion is complete after I shoot a couple of boxes of shells through it. :)

texas chase,

Could you link us to that 20ga buckshot load? I can't seem to find it at Midway or Remington.

However, I may have spoken out of context. Now that I look a little closer, they don't label it "reduced/managed recoil". I just read that at tactical firearms.com. That link is in this thread. They compare 3 different buckshot loads (20 ga.) for home defense and recommend the remmy because it is "softer" than the others, which are actually magnum loads now that I think about it. Sorry for the mistake.
