What does it do, what purpose does it serve? I see references in magazines
to "screw in", and all kinds of stuff. But it don't tell me what the stupid thing does. ANd I"M sure it's useful, and if I owned a shotgun, I'd want to know all about it... Hence my asking...

Choke is a constriction of the barrel near the muzzle that regulates the spread of shot. One can use choke to obtain optimum spread at a given range with a given load.
Most modern, common shotguns use screw in devices with varying degrees of choke.
