Shotgun Barrel Length

I own a Beretta A390 20ga. A few years ago I was given a 28" barrel as a gift, which is what I now always use (sporting clays, skeet, farm shooting). Now I have this 26" stock barrel lying around and I figured I might as well get the thing chopped (within legal limits). My question is: What is a practical length to cut it to for HD or any other application which the 28" can't fulfill. Do I need to get it rethreaded for chokes? What kind of spread will a straight tube give? So far I figured I might as well bring it to 18", since the long barrel does everything else I need.

Legal length is 18"... 18.5" to be sure.

IIRC this gun is gas operated. This means that shortening the barrel may cause unreliability. If so, you may have to use hotter loads and/or modify (drill out) the gas ports to get correct function. Good luck.

I'd consider selling the 26" barrel and using the proceeds toward buying a factory barrel of the length wanted. May cost a couple $$ more, but you won't have unexpected issues with gas ports, etc.
