I just got my first rimfire pistol (I couldn't take paying for BIG boy ammo.. it was costin me alot).. I picked up a lil cheap 22A S&W .. I love it .. DEAD on accurate .. they have a higher up model .. but i am VERY impressed with the gun ..

Look for a Ruger MKI or MKII, but not the newer MKIII. A MKII based Ruger 22/45 would also be an excellent choice. An old High Standard, a Colt Woodsman, and any Browning Buckmark would round out my list of classic .22 autos. Outside of those the S&W 22A like Tnieto mentions has developed a great reputation as an affordable .22 auto that handles like a full size pistol.
Also, you could look at a .22 conversion to a fullsize pistol; available for most popular service type semi-autos. CZ sells their Cadet as either a conversion for their CZ-75 & 85 or a factory complete pistol in .22LR. Kimber sells the Rimfire Target model as a factory complete pistol in .22LR as well.

I see nothing wrong , and everything right, with your first choice. The Beretta 87 Target Cheetah is an outstanding gun. Especially if you want something that is going to feel more like a 'real' gun than so many of the other premium .22s. Its got well placed and convenient mounts built on , and its a got a grip style normal for a larger caliber handgun. They aren't more popular because most people don't wish to shell out $650 for a .22. If you're comfortable doing so, then by all means don't settle.

If your looking for a plinker or lower end target gun any of the guns above are great and you will spend well under your 600 bucks. You may want to look at a Smith 41 also. I like the Rugers the best but that is just my 2cents.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with the MKIII Ruger. ANY of the Marks will do you just fine. The take down difficulties are exaggerated. A fine pistol with nearly infinite after market parts where you could easily go waaay over your target price or not.
Also, the Browning Buckmark is a very sweet pistol with a marvelous trigger out of the box. I own both the Ruger and the Browning. The Smith and Wesson Model 41 is highly sought after but higher than you want to spend. IMO, not worth the extra bucks over the Ruger Mark III or the Browning Buckmark.
You will thoroughly enjoy shooting rimfires and the more you shoot them the better marksman you will become with any caliber.

briansp82593, If you want of the more pricey guns and can afford it, I say buy what you really want, but a lot of the less expensive guns are very good too.
Concerning the Ruger autos> "The take down difficulties are exaggerated".
Got to agree with Charles Martel on that. It's easy to forget how since most people don't tear them down that much, but If most of the people that complain would just get their instuction booklet out and take a look it would be a lot easier. I have the 5.5" MKII Target model and like it but I've shot a few Buckmarks belonging to others that were darn good guns too.

I agree with Charles. I have a mark III (metal frame) and have no complaints. I am getting another .22 and will probably get another Ruger, although the buckmark got a very hard look.
One reason I like the Ruger is the selection of aftermarket parts. I installed a sear to and VQ grips to turn it into a target gun. My next one (5.5) will be for hiking, riding, and such and will leave the trigger and grips as stock.
