Got my question answered from manufacturers ... Military has sucked most of it up.

Hornady actually said they're filling contracts for 22cal projectiles for military production? Interesting...

Anyway, if you are willing to use other 22cal, try Golden West Brass for new production 55gr 22cal projectiles. They make both 55 and 62gr FMJ, open base, with cannelure. It's good product. I bought 3000 of the 55gr 22cal awhile back. Made for good ammo.

That was the answer I got. Winchester, Remington wouldn't confirm, but said that they expected for Demand to be pretty high for a while on their 55 FMJ/ BT. I know Federal ( ATK ) got a contract in Jan '07 and General Dynamics in feb '07. Both for small arms ammo. I didn't think they used Hornady, ect.. Maybe it is a sublet job or something.

Unless all efforts and resources have been diverted toward manufacturing the heavier bullets currently used in NATO Mil-Spec ammunition, then WHY would 55-gr FMJ be in short supply?

Our troops never use it any more.

Cheaperthandirt sent out an e-mail about 6 mos. ago. There is a shortage on .223 ammo.
But, I have seen other sources. Indicate a world wide shortage on copper, brass, lead, tin, etc.
Romax cable has doubled in price. Going towards triple.
I even saw, something related on the History Channel. China is buying old US Navy ships. They mix this steel with their steel. To make a better quality steel.

I think you answered your own question. I was on Brasmmans site last night and no 223 brass availabl. I have seen the same situation on other sites as well.

I can rationalize why .223/5.56mm brass might be in short supply. That's a short leap of logic. All I can figure is that perhaps manufacturing has tilted heavily in favor of filling worldwide orders for military contracts, which are for heavier bullets of 69-grains and more.

We civilian shooters who want cheap 55-grain bullets may be left in the proverbial dust for a while. Perhaps longer than we think.

I still have about half a case of 55gr american eagle. A year ago, if you paid anything over $4/box you were getting ripped off. Now I can't even find anyone who has it in stock.

Check with Graf & Sons. They have some very reasonable .223 bullets made by Prvi Partizan...Midway had Igman .223 bullets recently.
