Go here: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp Follow the prompts to the Winchester site at the bottom of the page. I've loaded both 185 and 230 gr Hornady XTP so you need to look for your bullet weight. Looks like 4.2 to 5.3 gr with the 230 gr bullet @1.2 OAL

I think you will find AA #5 or WSF better for full power XTP loadings. W231 will work, but is more "snappy" at full load strength.

Hornady 200 & 230 Gr. XTP factory is right at 1.235 O.A.L. (As is Rem. 230 Gr. Golden Saber as well)

Luggernut;

Hornady #7, page 898 contains the info you want for 185 grain XTP's. Page 899 has it for 200 grain XTP's. Page 900 for 230's.

Thanks gentlemen! I don't have a Hornady book. Lymnan doesn't have anything on this bullet and Speer has Gold Dot but I wasn't sure if the COL should be similar.

How about 6.0 grains of W-231 under a 185 grain XTP. This is a near maximum load. Lyman 48th Edition lists the 185 grain XTP maximum load at 6.1 grains of W-231 at just under 1000 fps.

Sorry for not giving all the info- I have the 230gr bullets.

Yeah...Figured you had the 230 grain XTPs. Just thought I might throw another idea out there. 185 grain bullets, whether they be Remington JHP or Hornady XTPs have served me well.:)

Accurate gives 7.8 to 8.7 Grs AA # 5 for 816 to 927 FPS with a 230 Gr.FMJ. @ 1.250 O.A.L. (I would start with 8.4)(I have shot this)

Winchester gives 5.3 Grs. W 231 for 832 FPS with a 230 Gr. TrFP @ 1.200 (I would start at 5.0)(I have shot this as well)

Winchester gives 6.1 Grs. WSF for 850 FPS with a 230 JHP @ 1.275 (too long, shoot your XTP at 1.235 and back down to 5.8 to start)(I have not shot this)

Load your XTP' at 1.235 O.A.L.:)

Back down at least to the recommended start amounts, maybe even another .1 Gr. less)

I just chrono'd some 230g FMJ's loaded with 5.2 grains of W231, and they came in around 700 fps... I don't think 5.3 grains would give the 832 fps the Winchester site claims.

By sources other than Winchester(Hodgden), that is pretty tame. I don't think Hodgdon wants to push their powders, myself.

Speer #13 goes from 5.6 to 6.2 Grs. W 231 for 789 to 858 FPS from a 4.4" barrel. (more reasonable)

Midway's "Loadmap" goes anywhere from 6.3 to 6.6 max for W 231 and 230 Gr. bullets, although at that level it is quite stout and I do not recommend over 6.1 myself.

Remember, we don't expect to get our desired velocity with our start load. If we did it right we get a nice starting place to work up from.

I have shot 6.0 Grs. W 231 with the 230 Gr. XTP @ 1.235 O.A.L. without pressure signs in 75 to 80 degree temps, but that load is Stiff and Snappy.

I much prefer 8.5 Grs. AA # 5 with the Zero 230 Gr. bullet. I got an Avg. velocity of 859 FPS in 85 degree weather (4" barrel CDP) with no pressure signs and "smooth for the velocity" recoil. (Zero JHP because it is accurate and much cheaper than the XTP.)

Speers factory loading of their 200 Gr. Gold Dot is 1.211 O.A.L. by my measurement. I suspect their 230 Gr. O.A.L. is very similar.

I pushed the 200 Gr. Gold Dot to an Avg velocity of 919 FPS (4" barrel CDP) and an Avg. 876 FPS (3" barrel CDP) with 9.4 Grs. AA # 5 at an O.A.L. of 1.215 at 95 degrees.

These loads were safe in my guns with my load procedures, Reduce 10% to start.

Thanks Walkalong. I'll have to try other powders when my W231 runs out. I think I'll stay well under your 6.0 gr of W231. I've used 5.2 with std 230gr FMJ so I'm sure somewhere around there is where I'll end up for now.

Thats a nice medium, fun load. I shot 5.5 Grs. of W 231 with any lead or jktd bullet from 225 to 230 grs. and one pltd 250 gr. bullet for yrs & yrs.

W231 is very forgiving as to charge wieght. It will give accuracy over a pretty wide range.

I am sure that is one reason so many people like it. It will give good results over a wide range of cartridges as well.:)
