Any THRers at Singapore that would like to take this foreigner out to the local shooting range.
I could swap stories about the neat guns that can be bought in the US. :p

Ok, why are you in Singapore?
The Military?

I haven't seen them sell chewing gum at the vending machines.
All of them are bad drivers too. They drive on the wrong side of the road! :D
Nah, not for the military. Work sent me since we have contractors do board assembly work for us. Ever since NAFTA :fire:, its cheaper for U.S. companies to export their manufacturing jobs overseas. Gotta love Bush41 for that. :cuss:

Welcome to leftist and sheeple land!
I don't know how to break this to you but there probably aren't many THRers in Singapore. I have not met any of my countrymen on THR and have met only a handful on Bladeforums.com. Please be advised that the nanny state/sheeple mentality is mucho STRONG over here so try not to talk about RKBA, guns, knives...etc.
Spitting is DEEPLY frowned upon ever since SARS became an issue. However, if you brought gum with you from stateside, feel free to chew openly. Private consumption is TOTALLY LEGAL, commercial importation is not.
Shooting range? The only civilian shooting range we have is the national shooting centre at 990 Choa Chu Kang Road, Singapore 699814. You need a member to take you there as a guest and only the rich qualify as memberships cost US$2890, ammo is expensive, range fees are exhorbitant and you have to leave your guns in the armoury even if you own them. I don't have a membership there so I can't take you shooting.
In any case, which hotel have you choosen to stay at? I can give you a few pointers on the more interesting things to see and do while you're in my country.
Cheers,

Kannofyre,
You have not met your countrymen on THR? Well, let me be the first to shake your hand, then! Singapore born and bred here. E-mail me at shimatta@masaka.com and we'll continue the conversation off-board.

IIRC chewing gum, either the substance or the act, is illegal in Singapore.
I'm not sure, but I don't think you can even bring it into the country with you.

Why on God's green earth would gum be illegal?

Mess. People stick it on stuff or spit it out. Obviously, some politician got it stuck on his shoe and decided to ban it.
The Singaporeans here can give us a further rundown on the trivial laws there.
Some, actually, aren't trivial, but the Singaporean way of enforcement is heavy-handed and Big Brother to the n th.

I do believe Singapore is a big time arms manufacturer and exporter.

A colleague who spent 6 months there described it as "6 months in a big shopping mall".

Okay, finished my first day over at Singapore. Here are my first impressions. Had a guy that works for the same company as me kinda show me around where he works. He's pretty friendly and all, and we got to talking about stuff... like how much cars cost over here. Like the 150% surcharge the government puts on car purchases, so a $30K car ends up costing $90K!
He also said that 'Singapore is a fine country', meaning that Singapore has a lot of fines that it imposes on the people. I did get the feeling that I'm in sheeple-land, but I don't know the degree of sheepleness.
At the factory, I did not get the sense of individual drive and determination on the work though. Seems that there are a lot of 'worker bees' and a few 'supervisor bees' that run pretty much the whole show. Wonder if thats a tendency because of the societal/government knows best structure here, or if its a specific company/factory here. I did notice the same thing with a factory over in the Fremont,CA area, so maybe its a company thing, and not Singapore thing.
One thing about reading newspapers, at least the ones that I've seen around, is that there are lots of ads with pretty/young females. I notice that this kind of mimics itself in the way the females dress here. I'm not complaining either. Makes them easy to look at. :D :o :D
Everyone speaks English over here, though not as fluid as normal, which is expected since English is not the only language. Looking at the people here, I could be one of them, at least appearance wise, though I don't think I could stand the nanny-ism. Heck, I can't stand the nanny-ism of Kalifornia already!!! :cuss:
kannonfyre/dleong, drop me a THR private message if you want to do a Singapore-THR 'virtual-shoot'. Work has put me up at the Shang-ri La Hotel.

IIRC (not sure, only lived there a short while) Hong Kong has the same deal :barf: The cars stay low mileage so they get more years out of them but still....

I have a picture of one of my Singaporean friends with my Benelli and tac gear, which she totally digs...maybe I should post it.... :p

But how could you tell, as both are statist, collectivist societies?

Mike Irwin,
Gum per se is NOT illegal in S'pore. Only the commercial importation of it is. For example, I have brought small quantities of it home from Taiwan for personal consumption back in 99. All the customs officer did when he saw the gum was ask if he could have a stick cos he was DYING for one. Also went to a police station to pick up some forms whilst chewing gum and the LEO on duty asked me if I could spare him a stick.
Lord Grey Boots:
"6 months in a shopping mall"? Only for western foreigners dude. Thing is, ya gotta get a seasoned local to take you around to see the more quaint and interesting things.
Moa:
Big kahuna in the South East Asian arms industry? Yep, you betcha. 5.56mm, 7.62mm, .50BMG, 40mm HE and 155mm weapons are all hot sellers for the local arms industry. But like I've said in previous posts, there might as well be a BIG sign erected at the airport saying "NO CIVILIAN WEAPONS ALLOWED" cos as a Singaporean you cannnot carry ANYTHING for defence of your loved ones or your life.
CZ-75: Trivial laws? What do you wanna know? Lemme start..... the law says that you can defend yourself when attacked but only if i) your life is in danger ii) you use only enough force to stop the attack and iii) you HAVE to do it BAREHANDED or with expedient items not designed to be weapons. LEOs and lawyers "STRONGLY RECOMMEND" that you run as far as possible and if that's not possible, or if you're trapped, NOT to fight back. :fire: Take the injuries that the thug wishes to dish out and then report to the police in a bloody and batterred mess so that they can locate, arrest and charge the responsible thug. In other words, be a good witness whilst being on the receiving end of kicks and rattling jabs + crosses. My take on this..... :banghead: to hell with that! I'm NOT :fire: going to be a :cuss: sheep!
Frohickey: Quote "I did get the feeling that I'm in sheeple-land, but I don't know the degree of sheepleness." Take it from me, the population is 90% sheeple. (For a country where almost all men under the age of 50 are trained soldiers/sailors/air men, their meekness is stunning. I guess it's cos almost everyone belives that you can be aggessive, tough and carry guns only when the authorities give you permission to do so.) Of the remaining people, 3/4 of them are pretending to be sheeple to blend in and avoid notice. The other 1/4 are aggressive, hardened individuals that don't give a crap. Oh yeah, my system set up does not allow me to send private messages. Could you give me an email address where can you be reached?
Good day to y'all,
