It will be used for fun on the range plus carrying in the field while hunting. As such, I'm thinking of either the GP100 in 4 inch or SP101 in 3 1/16 inch.
I may also use it as a truck gun and home defense gun.

Since you'll be taking it into the field I'd go with the GP100. If you plan to use it as a CCW too, the SP101. Either is a great choice for a 357 revo.

You cant go wrong with either of them, Rugers are built tough. I think that the GP100 holds 6, and the SP101 holds 5. The GP100 has adjustable sights(I think), and the SP101 dosen't.
I think both of them are fit to suit your needs. But personally I would go with the SP101, not really a particular reason, I just like them more.

SP101. Smaller & lighter. When you have to hike, weight matters.

If you were going to use this gun for CCW I would suggest the SP101 but since you said it will be a range gun, HD gun, and a hunting BUG, then the 4" GP100 is a great choice IMO.

i once owned a gp100 4". it was my first revolver. sad that i sold it, but i'm not sad that i still own my sp101 3". for carry and home protection, i won't trade it. it carries well.

if you want a gun to hunt with or target shoot, then get the gp100. for easier carry and enough punch to have in the truck, around the house, or in the woods for a hike, get the sp101.

There is always the option of buying both.

but, with what you are gonna use it for, I would go with GP-100. The sp101is a great little pistol but, it kicks like a mule with full house 357 loads. The Gp 100 has ajustable sights and is larger and heavier which makes it more controllable.

I have both in stainless steel. 6" GP, 2.25" SP.

I like them both, but both the wife and myself are far more accurate with the GP.

The GP gets taken to the range quite a bit more often.

I think I have the perfect combination (for me anyway) - The Gp100 in 6" for range and field and the SP101 in 2 1/4" for ccw. For the purposes you stated, I would go with the 4" or 6" Gp100. But, you can't go wrong with either!!

Here is a field holster I just got back from Harlow Holsters. Works great!!

I have him making a matching sheath for my hunting knife as well.

Definately a GP-100. It's a very nice gun and is suitable for hunting. The Ruger Security-Six and the Smith 66 are both a bit lighter for carrying, but new, I'd get the GP-100. Dollar for dollar, you can't get a better revolver. I don't much care for the SP-101 except for defense. For hunting, you need something a bit more suited for it.

Many people like 6-inch barrels and that's when the GP-100 starts getting a bit unweildy. A primo Ruger Security-Six 6-inch is perfect .357 for such purposes.
