The Gold Dot is a very good round. But then again, so is the SXT. Unless your SXTs are the Ranger stuff, I wouldnt say its any better than the Gold Dot.

I dont think there the rangers seeing they are older sxt's but it doesnt say ranger on the box. But I was noticed that a box of 50 rounds for the gold dot is the same price as a box of 20 rounds of the sxt.

Just a little off subject, but most of my defensive ammo is Speer Gold Dot. But I was just curious if the Speer ammunition comes from the same Albert Speer ammo machine of Germany's WWII war production.

When in doubt, use BOTH :D Alternate them every other round -- I'm serious about that.

When you say better, you need to qualify that...do you mean better expanding? Better feeding? Better accuracy?

In my opinion these discussions about the best HP rounds are all splitting hairs. I doubt anyone would like to get shot with any one of these. :D

I mean better as in stopping the threat before me.

Like I said...I doubt anyone would want to get shot with any of those rounds.

I believe .45 BALL was used to quite decent effect by our own military for quite awhile...

I pack 230 grain hardball in my .45 because I have no reason to think it would shrink. Further prosecution attorneys have suceeded in attacking CCW holders who defended themselves using "Extra deadly" bullets. This is the absolute primary reason I pack a .45 instead of something smaller. Do what you want, afterall you're looking after your own hide. In order to better make up your mind you might try testing the bullets for two things. Accuracy out of your gun, and performance on test media.

For the testing I'd suggest you take an old pair of jeans and a thick pad of old newspapers. Bundle the whole thing up, wet the paper and let her rip. Measure the "wound cavity" and penetration of each and make your call from there. By placing a few layers of denim in front you'll get some impression of what hitting a coat wearing person will do. Just for giggles, fire a round of ball into it and see how much difference you see because I'd love to know.

Just FYI, a 2" thick textbook won't stop a bullet even if the subject is Algebra! Ask me how I know this!

Totally aside from the point I once participated in an experiment on safety glasses. A pair of UVEX safety glasses were placed on the target 7 yds away. The glasses were shot with a .22LR, a .38 special, a .357 Mag and a .44 Magnum.

The .22 seriously dented the glasses, the .38 special was stopped by the glasses however it was nearly 1/2" deep by then. The .357 Mag went right through but left a hole .26" in diameter in the glasses. The .44 Mag also went right through and left a hole .40" in diameter. It seems the plastic "cauterizes" itself with the remaining heat from the bullets passage. Sadly we didn't try any .45ACP or 9mm on it but I'm guessing the 9 would be somewhere between the .38 &.357 whereas I'm not sure how the .45ACP would end up at all.

I will tell you what the best SD ammo is for you...
It is whatever ammo is 100% reliable in your gun.
It is whatever ammo you can shoot accurately in your 100% reliable gun.
It is whatever ammo you can shoot quickly, and accurately in your 100% reliable gun.

Did I mention that your SD ammo HAS TO BE 100% RELIABLE.
The ammo has to go "BANG" everytime you pull the trigger.

You have to be able to hit the intended target.

Don't worry about price. A wooden box is a lot cheaper than a gun safe, but I bet you don't keep your guns in one...don't put your self in one either!

Acctually I do have a gun safe and I do put them in it, and a wooden box is a hell of alot more expensive than a gun safe how do i know you ask? My wife is mortician:what: . And my origianl inquiry was about the brands of ammo, all my firearms are very reliable as are the magazines so I understand where you are coming from I learned a very hard lesson a while back in reliability so you are correct in that sense.

You need to read some of Massad Ayoob's articles.

Here's the flying ashtray, and yeah, it's a 200 grain bullet. I've got a few stashed and I'm stingy with 'em. They're really accurate in my Ruger. And, it's a reload. Yeah, I read a lot of Ayoob, but I don't worry a lot about carrying with reloads. Either a shooting is justified or it isn't. To my knowledge, MOST if not ALL police departments carry hollow point. I don't really think I'm in any legal jeapardy carrying effective ammunition. If they asked why I carried hollow point, I'd say "For safety. I don't want over-penetration to protect innocent bystanders." ;) Or, "Because that's what the police use, so I figured it'd be the best for me." The military would use expanding bullets, too, if they weren't bound by treaty/international law. You can bet on that.

Excuse the fuzzy. I know this stupid camera has a close up function, but I'm too lazy to dig out the directions.

The Speer Gold Dots in 45 ACP that I have chronographed only ran between 700-750 fps.

I think this is too slow and would pick something faster..

Actually it's manufactured just a few miles down the river from me in Lewiston, Idaho.

I like the +P 200g Gold Dot, but could make do with nearly any 185-230g expanding bullet. I would not use FMJ's except at the range due to the overpenetration problem.
