Well, the catch is, catch22, we have to know what type of competition you are interested in. Rifle, pistol, or shotgun?

Find a good shooter that plays the game you want to, ask questions and pay attention to the answers. Repeat as necessary.

What type of shooting is important, but if you are shooting handguns go HERE (http://www.brianenos.com/store/books.html) and buy 'With winning in mind' by Lanny Basham, 'Thinking Practical Shooting' by Saul Kirsh, and "Practical Shooting: Beyond Fundamentals' by Brian Enos. These three books cover mindset, practice, fundamentals, advanced techniques, match preparation, and just about anything else you need to know. It will be money well spent, and it applies to just about anything you might do with a handgun.

So is this a Gallary Bullseye shoot, or IDPA style? Blind targets? Stationary targets? Moving targets? Falling plates?
Knowing the discipline of shooting, will get you more specific responses.
Since you're new to the shooting competition, you may not know which discipline describes the shoot best. No one will fault you for that.
So, all I can suggest is for you to describe the course of fire. There are clubs that design some really fun and challenging shoots for their members that encorporate pieces of Bullseye to IDPA. Truly a challenge for a person that is strong in one or the other.
