Police Wednesday were investigating the death of a man who entered a north Aurora residence and was fatally shot.
Police spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh said the identity of the dead man and the man who did the shooting were being withheld pending further investigation.
"Right now, we are investigating this as a homicide," Walsh said. The Arapahoe County district attorney will decide if the shooting may have been justified.
Walsh said the incident began about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a woman who was at a home in the 500 block of Emporia St. went out to get her purse from a car.
She was hit by one of two or three men waiting outside, Walsh said.
"One of the men entered the home and a 25-year-old man who was living there shot him," Walsh said. The wounded suspect was taken to a hospital where he died Wednesday morning.
Walsh said any motive for the assault on the woman and other circumstances leading up to the incident weren't yet known.
The man who did the shooting has been questioned but not arrested, Walsh said.
An autopsy on the victim was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Police were still looking for the other suspect or suspects who fled.
Neighbors said they thought several people lived in the home and that they didn't cause any problems.
"We just moved here a couple of months ago so I don't know the man who lives there very well," said Julie Harris.
"He seems to be very nice. I don't know what happened last night. I was in my back bedroom with the television on."
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Tom Sobieski at (303) 739-6710.
