I saw the pistol in a local pawn shop. It was in great shape. I am wondering how rare are these. I have not seen one before and I was just curious. It is at a decent price and I might get it if things are right.

I don't think they are particularly rare, I'd imagine it's worth around $200 or so..depending on condition.

I don't know how rare they are but I know they are very desireable and if you don't like it, you will have no trouble selling it. Just curious, how much are they asking? I have seen them for $200-300 and I think that is a good price, if it is less than $250, I would buy it right away. 9mm revolvers are a little hard to come by for some reason even though people like them.

I got them down to $225 plus tax. It comes out to $243. Thanks I think I will go out and get it today.

I presume it used moonclips?? Is it a 5 or 6-shot?

It looks like you can either use moon clips or just place the round in the cylinder. The shell extractor won't work if you do it that way though. Where would I find moon clips for it?

It is a 5 shot by the way.

5-shooter with moons. A *really* neat gun, very street-practical. The power level is VERY well balanced with the gun's size/heft. 9mm J-class guns are a "cult classic", people who are into 'em keep 'em. +Ps in the 115grain range should really rock in that thing.

If no moons came with it, that'll be a pain. I think I read somewhere that it takes the same moons as the S&W J-frame 9mm (model 940?) which makes sense. There's that company out there that specializes in moonclip wheelguns, I think it's www.moonclips.com - anyways, they should have clips.

The revolver forum at www.rugerforum.com would be a good place to post for info on moon clip compatibility/availability. I recommend scoring at least 20+ as soon as you can, and a "de-mooning tool" to reduce stress on both you and the clips.

Thanks for the info. I just ordered 30 moon clips from TK Customs for the pistol. I went and got it for $243 total. It has some carrying scratches on it that are not hard to buff out and it doesn't look like it has been fired very much. The trigger action in double is a bit heavy, but the single action is crisp and clean. Is there anything else I should be looking for good or bad?

I have a 940 by S&W and it is a great gun Speer 124 Golddots +p really rock the world in this thing. I would love to find a ruger in 9mm w/ 3" barrel.

I highly recommend a spring kit from Wolff, you can lighten up that DA pull without compromising reliability, as the Wolff kit comes with three different weight main-spings.

I run the lightest in mine and haven't had a single light-strike.

The few pawnshops I've been too usually have overpriced rusting guns. If you don't mind, does the pawnshop you frequent a good place to purchase? I'm also in the central Texas area.

I frequent several in the Temple, Belton, Harker Heights, Killeen and Copperas Cove area. I just make the rounds about once every week or two to see if they have anything worth buying. I am usually looking for Colts or Brownings for a good price. If I find a pistol that gives me that warm fuzzy feeling:p and the price is right, I will buy it. The Ruger caught my eye because I have never seen a 9mm revolver. If you give me an idea of what you are looking for I could help you narrow your search.:D Today I am going to the Georgetown/ Round Rock area to look for another deal on a pistol.

Thanks for the link. That helps me alot! This ruger 9mm is actually the first revolver I have ever owned. My father let me have his S&W 13-2 to shoot at the range, but I have not made it out there yet. It was sitting in the closet like most of his guns and was just wanting to be shot and loved on. :rolleyes:

A few weeks ago I picked up one of these SP101's NIB unfired with box ,paperwork and shipping sleeve. S/S 2 1/4" 9mm.I gave 400.00 for it only because it's NIB and a discontinued model.To my understanding you must use the full moon clips to fire the 9mm in these revolvers. I don't know that to be a fact though.I believe it's Federal (?) is making a rimmed 9mm for use in the 9mm revolvers. My dealer was telling be about the rimmed 9mm.

Having a SP101 in .38+P - very impressed with it, and most of my autoloaders being 9mm, I covet a SP101 in 9mm.

Yes you need to use the moon clips.

I wish Ruger would start making these again.

You only need to use the clips if you want the casings to eject without help from a pencil shoved through the front of the cylinder. The 9x19 cartridges still headspace on the case mouth (unless you ream the cylinder out for 9x23).

I don't believe the 9mm Federal (thick rimmed 9mm) cartridge has been available in recent (at least 10) years.

It was originally developed for Charter Arms' 9mm revolver (the Pit Bull IIRC), which will only work with the 9mm Federal ammo.

I bought a reduced power spring for the trigger pull and then went to the range after the moonclips and springs arrived on the same day. This Ruger is one sweet shooting little revolver. It is almost like shooting a 22cal. after shooting 40s & 45s for so long. It is very accurate at 15 & 25 yrds. My wife loves the pistol. She shoots it better than her BHP. The only thing that I hated was pulling off the brass from the moonclips. Talk about a pain in the :cuss: . Great deal on a great little shooter. Can't beat it.:D
