What alloy were the early 1911s and A1s made of?

I don't know the ASTM but it was pretty ordinary "ordnance steel" and soft by modern (or even contemporary) standards. They had such things as zone hardening of slide nose and slide stop notch, and a hard steel firing pin bushing.
