I have a model 17-3 in very good condition .. Serial number starts with 3K6XXXX.. Anyone know what its worth and how old it is? Also I am looking for some Target grips.. I want the thick ones with the smith&wesson medallion in them. Do all of them have finger grooves? If so i'm left handed , do they make a special grip for left handed so the thumb groove would be on the right side of the gun? Is there anywhere to purchase these online reasonable? Thanks.

Welcome.

Here you go:

Anyone know what its worth and how old it is?
No idea on the age (someone will be along in a minute with that info). They're worth around $400 here. Never sell it. It's the best .22 revolver you'll ever own. And by all means - shoot it.

Also I am looking for some Target grips.. I want the thick ones with the smith&wesson medallion in them. Do all of them have finger grooves?

They do not all have finger grooves. You can find target grips for them.

If so i'm left handed , do they make a special grip for left handed so the thumb groove would be on the right side of the gun?

That's not a thumb groove. The grip on the left side of the frame is relieved so as to allow you to get the cartridges in, and the spent cases out.

Is there anywhere to purchase these online reasonable?

Check eBay. Your revolver is a K-frame with a square butt.

Value depends largely on condition. A gun in "very good" condition that includes significant holster wear, etc. will be worth a lot less than a gun in "very good" condition that is virtually new with the original box, tools, and paperwork. Value is probably somewhere between $300 and $500, but without more detailed info about the gun's condition it is hard to say. Your model 17-3 was made in 1972 according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson.

If you are referring to factory original grips, then no, most S&W factory target grips did not have fingergrooves. The fingergroove combat grips were made by S&W for a relatively short period. They tend to be pricey when you find them. S&W no longer makes grips at all now. All S&W grips now are made by outside companies, primarily Hogue and Ahrends.

If so i'm left handed , do they make a special grip for left handed so the thumb groove would be on the right side of the gun?

I'm a lefty also, and alas, S&W did not make such grips. BTW, it is not a thumb groove, it is actually a speedloader cutout. When S&W made the first target grips long ago, they had no cutouts of any kind. They started relieving the left grip panel when folks started to realize that the grips were sometimes interfering with ejection of the empty brass. That said, S&W did make some sets of target grips (no fingergrooves) with cutouts on both sides for presentation models, with the cutout on the right panel so the grips would not obscure whatever medallion or logo was engraved on the sideplate.

If you are talking about aftermarket grips however, all bets are off. About a zillion manufacturers make a bewildering variety of grips for S&W revolvers in about every shape and material you can imagine.

Hogue makes a nice one piece slip on. I got one for my 10-4 k frame. And they make one for both round or square butt. Best part they cost around $18.
