I was thinking handgun and maybe shotgun.
It would be nice if there was a school that puts you through a qualifying course to determine at what level you need to be placed, ie. Defensive handgun I or II.

theelmer,
If you think you need to go through a qualification drill to see which course you should be placed in, you need to take the lower level course.
If, by some chance, you are placed in a course that is really way below your skill level, try to "clean" the course or find some other way to get the most out of it. I doubt that would happen since even experienced shooters usually learn something new at lower level courses, but it beats going in over your head in a more advanced course your first time out and struggling to keep up.

tlhelmer, plenty of skuls around for pistol:
•Louis Awerbuck is in da 'hood in August-September in Lebanon. Louis holds classes on most systems. Lone Ranger and I will be there for the HITT class. Contact Capt. Ken Campbell of the Boone County Sheriff's Department.
•The Sheriff in Boone County is progressive enough to allow Ken, and Ken is kind enough, to coordinate other instructors such as THE Pat Rogers. Do not know if THE Pat will be here this year, but we're keeping fingers crossed (I have a pony keg of Prophetstown Ale as bait). Ken will give you the details. I think Louis still gets to the Land of Orange after he leaves us. So maybe you could extend your reach by heading down Souf.
•Andy Kemp at the Midwest Training Group based in Naperville, Illinois bring in other traveling instructors as well, Cirillo, Hackathorn, DTI, etc., et al. This September they are hosting LFI-II which is handgun/shotgun (you start the gun fu stuff here) focused.
•Chuck Taylor comes through here. Thought he used to hit Owensboro and Louisville.
•The Chapman Academy in Hallsville, Missouri is a full morning's drive but worth it. Most underrated instruction in the gun camp junkie subculture.
Lots of other traveling instructors as well. Keep your eyes open.

Unfortuantely, not much pistol or shotgun training, but they teach you a helluva lot about rifles and machine guns.

Check the web sites for Chuck Taylor, Mas Ayoob, John Farnam, etc. They will show the training schedules and you can see how close they will get to you. For a first class, LFI 1 from Ayoob is a great introduction into the comprehensive view of self defense, and some basic pistol techniques. The other schools seem to soncentrate more on shooting technique, and you really need both to be well rounded. Train with different instructors, they each have their preferences and biases. I've trained with Chuck Taylor, Clint Smith, Mas Ayoob, S&W Academy, Jim Cirillo, Dennis Tueller, John Farnam. These were all classes where they traveled to an area close to me.

Start with the level 1 class. I infer from your post that you've not been to school. The key to developing your skill set is to start with, and continue to practice, the fundimentals.
I've taken at least a dozen level 1 classes. Why? It's all about the fundimentals. Or, as Louis says, "What's an advanced gunfight?" The advanced classes are fun, and great learning experiences, but only after you've nailed down the basics.
Get to know Ken Campbell. He schedules good trainers through your area regularly. Take advantage of it.
To answer your question, I've had Gunsite 270 General Rifle, Gunsite AZ CCW, multiple RangeMaster, FAS, multiple Randy Cain, Jim Crews.
Enjoy.

Thanks Skunk thats a very nice offer.
I am not sure what level I should attend. I have attended the Indiana basic academy 12 weeks, Indiana State Police academy 22 weeks, DEA winter NOSS which included firearms training, compete in IDPA, an IDPA range officers school.
I instruct defensive tactics, LEO active shooter and counter terrorism.
I would want a school that would challenge me and provide me with new info and tactics. No matter how good you are there is always room for improvement.

I found a link to Mid-south. Sounds interesting.
It is in Mississippi. Anyone have any thoughts on this school?

What shooting school have you been to..
My neighborhood. I grew up in a place that was filled with drugs and violence. This is what I learned: if you hear shots you better run for cover; stay away from hot spots; watch your back and be alert of your surroundings; better be alone than with bad company; walk softly and carry a big stick.
Now the shooting school is the web, books and probably will be buying some videos.

My firearms formal training started when I took LAPD SWAT instructor Larry Mudgett's basic course in Los Angeles in the early 90's. I guess that eventually became part of what ITTS is now.
My most useful and what I consider to be my most significant training was the 250 at Gunsite. I learned much, much more than just gunhandling and shooting skills there. That really was a life changing experience for me.
AZ CCW, also at Gunsite. Some other minor state CCW courses here and there.
I also had the honor of occasionally shooting with some very high-speed low-drag water-loving fellows on Coronado back in the mid 90's, and still have some close friends who work in certain branches of government who I like to compare notes with on occasion...(though they are quite horrified at my choice of what they think of as the "ancient" 1911 Springfield Professional Model for daily carry... but I digress)...
Currently I compete in frequent IDPA and occasional USPSA matches, and am heading back under the gate with the raven on top this fall for more advanced training.
One thing for sure, the more I learn, the more I know I don't know as much as I would like, and can always learn something more and do things a little better than my "normal" ability. I guess I will always be a student in that respect.

I've taken classes where I've got friends so the lodging is cheap. I've had classes at Front Sight, Thunder Ranch, and Gunsite. I'm a First Family member at Front Sight and a buddy lives 5 miles from the Gunsite classrooms. RKBA!
