Ahg! My usual shooting location (Tunnel #6, for those of you around here) has apparently been bulldozed and declared off-limits to shooters. :banghead: So I'm looking for some other place I can practice with my rifles (I know about the indoor ranges in Denver, but as far as I know they're all pistol/.22 only). Does anyone know of a place other the the private ranges in Byers, Bailey, and Idaho Springs?

Boulder Rifle Club is open for Reduced Course Highpower matches (there is a match on Saturday). Buffalo Creek Gun Club (near Bailey) has an open membership. It is primarily built for Highpower shooters, and has firing lines up to 600 yards. I know that Cherry Creek and a place in Idaho Springs are both available to you, and have more pistol facilities.

I know I'm at least 30 years out of date around there, but what ever happened to Table Mountain gun Club?

Walosi - I believe the range up on Table Mountain was gone before I became interested in shooting; at least four or five years ago. I don't know why it closed down, but it would've been just a perfect location for me to use.

Steve - Normally, I would just join one of the private ranges. However, I'm only here for the summer, and I really can't spare a whole year's membership fee for just 2 months of actual shooting. I go to some pistol matches out at the Aurora Gun Club, but high-power isn't something I have the equipment for here (at school I can use our club's M1A).

When I was a member, Table Mountain had a large membership (2-300 IIRC) and a very nice trap, pistol and rifle range. I finally learned to shoot my NRA 03-A3 there, after dufing around with it for several years. We had an excellent junior program, and team, instructed by one of the AF Academy champs. Only comment on its' demise....damndamnddamn.

BTW, just so you feel bad, the range here (Montana) is 22 minutes away (maybe, if i drive slow), costs 40 dollars for all year, has a rifle range out to 600 yards (including gongs, targets, etc), covered overhead)
5 (count 'em, five) skeet/trap shooting stations
1 pistol/do whatever ranges up to 50 yards
1 more up to a 100 yards
and a dedicated 22 range up to a 100 yards.

for 40 bucks
and i've never seen it full.

My former husband used to shoot trap up there in the early '80s; it was so much fun to bring the kids and watch.

While visiting the area recently, I believe people were saying that it is now the State Patrol's shooting range.

The range at Cherry Creek requires you to shoot from the bench with rifles, and doesn't let you post or collect targets.

I shoot at CC fairly often. It is true that almost all the rifle shooting there is off the bench so it is not the best range for shooting from field positions. It is not true that they do not allow posting or collecting targets. There are ceasefires for target changes every half hour or so, so you will have ample opportunity to change and collect targets there. Just don't move a rifle there unless you've cased it even if it's just two spots down the line unless you want to get hollered at and treated like a 5-year old. It's in the CC state park and you will need to buy a day pass for the park in addition to the range fee, so it's best to go with some friends to reduce the cost of range time.

Under the old management a few years ago they did target changes fairly infrequently and you weren't going to be changing your targets or bringing them back unless your timing was good.

IAN, head up to Dillon and come back a ways on highway 6 to a road that will take you to a public range that is free and open to the public. Just ask someone when you get up there for directions. This range was built by the good offices of then Summit County Sheriff Joe Morales, who is now director of the Colorado Department of Public Safety making him the top law enforcement officer in Colorado, as well as perhaps the most decent human being in Colorado.

There have been some recent problems with neglect of maintenance at this range, which is a "tragedy of the commons" problem. A news story on that is here (http://www.summitdaily.com/article/20070827/NEWS/108270055) This was back in August and some locals have been trying to clean it up, so it may be better now.

IAN, another option would be to go see the "Dragon Man" East of Colorado Springs at ten bucks a day. Just to see the place and talk to the Dragon is worth ten bucks, but you'll be able to shoot as well. Ask around at gun stores for precise directions, or maybe someone here can give them.
