I just picked up a 3" heavy barrel model 10 made in the mid 70's. I am interested in some unique? markings on the frame (at the butt of the grip)
There's an X inside square and a U inside a circle, also a small W stamped further up the grip and and an add'l the 3 digit number and the letters xo on the crane, the reg model number is stamped in the usual places and there are on other markings on the gun which aren't normally found on the model 10 Smith. contract police/military firearm? the 3" HB is interesting also

Those are assembly numbers that only have meaning at the factory.
