I need to get a .22 revo plinker that won;t break the bank. Is there any such animal for under $200? It's basically gonna be my 9 year old's gun so it can't be a large one. Any suggestions?

Ruger Single Six 22lr/22mag can usually be found under $200. (used) I bought mine in stainless w/Pach grips for $185.00
These things are plentiful, get out and look around.

The hard fact of the matter is that GOOD revolvers are expensive Because they're expensive to make. You won't find one with a "poly-something" frame. You may hit a lucky exception, but I don't know of any NEW $200.00 revolvers that are likely to be satisfactory - at least for long. Also they don't have much resale value either. Solution? Sure. Look for a good USED revolver. Besides the local shops check out Internet auctions. Many guns that are mechanicallly perfect sell for lower prices because of worn cosmetics. I recently purchased a gun meeting this description for $175.00 which is well inside your budget.
To be more specific, look for a Ruger Single Six or Bearcat single action, or an older Charter Arms .22 revolver, and don't forget those made by Taurus.

If you add an extra $100, you can get him a nice used S&W model 17(6") or 18(4") K22. He will then have a quality .22 revolver that he can pass to his son or daughter. I still shoot the 5 screw K22 (pre model 17) that my father left to me. He bought that gun new in 1950. It's still as accurate as ever.
My 2 cents,

Take a look at some of the old H&Rs. They are not in the same league as far as quality & finish as Rugers or S&Ws but they hold up and function well at half the price. My first revolver, which I still have close to 30 years, is a H&R 922. It is as accurate as my Ruger Single Six. I just picked up a 60+ year old H&R Trapper for $75 on auction. Accurate as all get go. Here's some nice models over at gunbroker.com: http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=9383680 ; http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=9347757

Well let me throw in a vote for the Heritage Rough Rider, solid gun, and you get the 22 LR and 22 Mag cylinders for under $150 bucks, and they've done some nice birdshead grips now.

Just for what it's worth, you can buy a brand new Ruger MKII in .22lr for around $250. IMHO you can't get a better .22 for the price. I have one that must have 5000 rounds through it and never a problem. The gun is totally reliable and extremely accurate, they come with 4" or 6" barrel. They make a great target or plinker. For the little guy I think the 4" would be the way to go.
Because a "good" quality revolver is more difficult and time consuming to manufacture, it costs a lot more to produce than a good quality semi auto like the Ruger MKII. For the price they don't come much better than the Ruger.
Also remember that the cowboy style revolvers really look cool but most dont have a swing out cylinder and each spent cartridge has to be ejected individually and SA only handguns have to be cocked each time which could be hard on his thumb after awhile which could take the fun out of it for him. Once he gets a little older and his hands are big enough, he might really enjoy a SAO revolver, I know I love my Blackhawk. Just something to think about.

Ditto on the Rossi....but for an auto that will last for ever, you can't beat the Ruger-but what a take down-not to mention the reassembly!!!

Check www.gunsamerica.com You can find new guns under retail prices.I've gotten several off of there and have been more then satisfied with them. That's just a suggestion.I would recommend buying a new gun for not much more money. Then you know what you're buying. The little Ruger MKII is a fine little semi auto. For the price you can't beat it. It would still be a bargain at twice the price.

I have seen some good used H&R .22 revolvers for under $100.
Have seen some 25+ year old ones that still shoot well, so they are not junk.
