I wasn't sure where to post this but this seemed like the most logical place. I am fairly new to rifles. I have had a Marlin 22 bolt for awhile and just bought a Rock River for competition. The competition I will be shooting will be 200 and 300 yard. What would be a good scope and what magnification do I need to shoot 300 yards? I am also looking for something that won't break the bank. Thanks in advance for your help.

300 yards with 223 ? what kind of comp is this? just wondering. id figure 300 yards to be working more towards the 308 range. ( not that 223 CANT do it. but 308 just does it better)

Anything with a max magnification of 9x or over should work. You can go much higher, but quality glass with those magnifications is gonna set you back some serious $$$. If it was my choice, I'd go with something in the 14x range, that way you can still have a lower power for close in shots.

I can't figure out why you would even need any magnification at 300 yards

Because many people, myself included, cannot shoot those tiny groups without the aid of quality optics.

it depends ENTIRELY on what type of competition.

I was going to try open sights but also wanted to know what type of magnification I would need for 300 yards. Thanks for the replys.
